Daughter of Channel 5 reporter "going to Hollywood" on American Idol

17 year old Ayla Brown, daughter of WCVB, Channel 5, reporter Gail Huff, has been selected as one of the 175 hopefuls who are going to Hollywood on Fox's American Idol. The Boston tryouts were actually held back around October. The tryouts start on tomorrow nights (Wednesday) show.

On air, American Idol did show Ayla hugging her parents after being selected. AI identified Gail Huff as a "local television personality" without mentioning her by name or for whom she worked.

On tonite's Fox25 News at Ten, Fox25 profiled and interviewed Ayla. Dad was also interviewed. Gail Huff was not mentioned and nowhere to be seen.

I'm sure Ayla, due to AI contractual obligations, has to speak to Fox25. But you'd think that MAYBE in the spirit of competition (even though it's February sweeps) they would have mentioned something about Mom..."Ayla's mom is Gail Huff, a reporter for WCVB in Boston" or something or other.

Ayla, by the way, will be attending Boston College on a full basketball scholarship. Pretty girl too. Good for her.

The day after Seaport Hotel auditions in October, both
the Herald and the Globe reported her making it to the Hollywood
auditions(taped in December). Both newspapers sent a reporter
to the Seaport Hotel so there was no way to hide the news.

Nice Fox25 build-up, though.

Just out of curiosity, did Gail have her "I'm a celebrity, I work for a TV station" look on when they showed her? I missed the show

I don't think Ayla Brown has reached her 18th birthday yet, so if she made it to the 24 semifinalists (the show's judges actually decided on the 24 semifinalists for "Idol 5" in December, but the public announcement of the semifinalists won't be made until the "Idol" episode being broadcast next Wednesday, February 15th), her mom wil probably be taking a leave of absence from WCVB for however long Ayla's in the "Idol 5" competition to chaperone her.

Once the "Top 12" are chosen, the "Idol" finalists live in a mansion near Hollywood for however long they stay in the competition, and finsliats under the age of 18 have to have a parent live with them in the mansion.

One more thing: If Ayla Brown ends up being one of the last two contestants in the running for the "Idol 5" title, WFXT's local newscasts on May 23rd (the night of the final sing-off) and 24th (the night the winner is announced) will be All-Ayla-All-The-Time. Last year, the Fox affiliate in Tulsa devoted just about it's entire 9 P.M. (CT) newscast to hometown girl Carrie Underwood the night she won "Idol 4". If Ayla Brown is one of the "Final Two", WFXT's newscasts will no doubt have similar saturation coverage, to the likely exclusion of nearly all other news stories.

Keep in mind..

...that Ayla Brown is not the only "local" (meaning those who made it thru via the Boston auditions) contestant although she may be the one receiving the most press at this moment.

Fox25 will go all-whomever-all-the-time if anyone from New England (esp. Massachusetts) makes it all the way although, granted, "pretty young local girl from Wrentham, MA going to BC on a full basketball scholarship wins American Idol 5" sounds alot better than anything else.

Meanwhile, back in the real reality world..

Original American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, won a Grammy tonite for her hit "Breakaway". She won for Fave Pop Hit.

It's February sweeps, so it's only natural they're hyping it up to the max

Re: Keep in mind..

I'll bet the head coaches of the other women's basektball teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference are hoping and praying that Ayla Brown wins "American Idol 5" so she'll be recording and touring as a singer instead of attending college and playing basketball.

She's supposed to be one of the top women's basketball prospects in the country.

She actually won two Grammys: Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (for "Since U Been Gone") and Best Pop Vocal Album (for "Breakaway"). I don't recall "Fox" or "American Idol" mentioned in either of her acceptance speeches. She did thank the fans, though. She also thanked radio for being so friendly to her music over the past year. You're welcome, Kelly.

There was a little "tiff" between Clarkson and Simon Cowell for the auditions of A.I. This year...she almost didn't allow any of her songs to be sung by any of the contestants. Cowell said it was unfortunate that she (at the time) forgot who gave her her start. She did eventually allow them to be in.

but who cares, Kelly Clarkson is awesome!
