David Crosby, Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash Co-Founder, Dies at 81

Crosby was one of the greatest vocalists ever. His body of work with The Byrds and CSN will endure. Crosby himself said he cheated Death for many years. He overcame a stint in prison and a grim drug addiction.

"Guinnevere" and "Renaissance Fair" are just two of his many dazzling tracks. RIP...

A beautiful voice that went through so many trials...may he forever RIP. Condolences to Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and his many other friends and family members.

Listening to radio stations play NO CSN&Y tonight. All voice tracked / pre scheduled. Did any stations break format to play Crosby and acknowledge the loss of an important artist?

What stations did you listen to? WAXQ in NYC played several CSN&Y songs tonight. WMGK in Philly played both Byrds and CSNY, including the Crosby-written "Almost Cut My Hair" and "Wooden Ships." WUMB in Boston played several of his solo songs. Even KEXP broken format to play Crosby music.

Glad to hear some stations still adhere to the age old radio tradition when an artist dies. But not here in Boston, though my tuner can't receive WUMB so I missed that. Mostly listened to the city's AAA station WXRV, the only station left that might still play CSN&Y within its normal format. Apparently they were voice tracked and couldn't respond to the news. But scanning the dial all the stations seemed to be pre-programmed as well.

Have CSN and CSNY totally "aged out" of WZLX's approved-for-airplay playlist?

I notice several radio stations continue to play David Crosby, CSNY, and C&N songs today. WXPN Philadelphia played two songs an hour this morning. They also did a tribute to local DJ legend Jerry Blavat, who died today. WFUV NYC played two Crosby songs in the 7AM hour. WAXQ played Long Time Gone.

This is an interesting side-bar to the Crosby obit. The Washington Post says there were moments Thursday when news organizations had trouble confirming Crosby's death. They had a statement that had been put out on the PR newswire, but it was unconfirmed. Just a few weeks ago, we had experienced the premature death announcement for Jerry Lee Lewis. News organizations didn't want a repeat performance:

Actual confirmation didn't come until late in the day. The Washington Post story didn't run until 8:37 PM. So it could also explain why some radio stations stayed away from playing songs as a memorial until there was formal confirmation that the initial report was accurate.

This is yet another unfortunate result of news organizations wanting to be "first" to get news stories out there, so they blast a headline and then properly verify and fact check later. It can lead to the on again/off again reporting. The same thing happened when Queen Elizabeth II passed. A well-known journalist posted prematurely on Twitter that she'd passed, and then had to retract.

RIP David Crosby. A great vocalist for sure. Struggled with some personal demons, as do many creatives.

An article about how radio responded to the death of David Crosby:

The article missed the tributes done at non-commercial AAA stations that specialize in music for boomers such as WUMB and WXPN.

We had that situation with Tom Petty, he was dead, then he wasn't until he was.

Jerry Kristafer on WJMJ Hartford, the Archdiocese's '50s-to-today music station, was playing a song an hour Friday morning, including the little-remembered, seldom-played Crosby solo single from 1983, "Hero," a Hot 100 stiff that was a top 5 AC hit.
