Your person views creep into way too many posts Park-man... it's very annoying and flies in the face of why most people come to this website.. please knock it off.. You make coming to this site much much less fun.

State Censorhip of the airwaves is NOT fun.

Wake up America. Do you really want the government - here the FBI - to tell broadcasting outlets - here WBZ Radio AM 1030 - what news items they can broadcast. I don't.

If you watched Emily Rooney's "Beat The Press" on Friday you would have seen the FBI Office at One Center Plaza in plain view on the second floor of that office building with the FBI Decal on the window. How about replacing it with a bulls eye. Flo Jonic may have save hundreds of lives by blowing the cover on the incompetents at the Boston FBI office. The FBI was less concerned about public safety than a CYA maneuver.

I am not ready to give an inch on freedom of the press and any real American or real American broadcaster/newsperson must feel the same way.

The WBZ watch will continue until further notice.

Speak for yourself. I don't feel that way. Your post was more "not fun" for me than the one you responded to.

Why? And no. You have a right to your speech as do we.

Thanks for the support. Sometimes I think I am shouting into an empty tunnel.
If we give an inch here we will slide inevitably into state censorhip.
As noted before John Peter Zenger's 370 anniversary of his acquittal of seditious libel was on the very day Flo Jonic was fired by WBZ AM 1030 the "alleged" all news station.
Ms. Jonic should be given the John Peter Zenger award whenever that is given - if it still is. Perhaps, the goverment has censored that already.
Censorship of the press in NOT FUN !

I have to say I agree with these sentiments... I didn't have a lot of respect for WBZ's news before this either, as I don't really trust most mainstream news outlets... I have even less respect now. News shouldn't be vetted through government agencies...

MEGA-DITTOS! (sorry...)

So what has Gary to say?

Has "Lapierre on the Loose" weighed in on this? After all, he is quick to tell us how to think about everything else under the sun while still "maintaining his unbiased brand of journalism". If he has weighed in on this I'm guessing that it was completely on the side of management.

Anyone pick on the the fact the ABC ran an interview with a Chechnian (sp) rebel leader even though Russia threatened to throw the entire network out of the country? ABC ran it anyway, WBZ caved to pressure from the FBI.

Flo was right in her assessment that WBZs reputation in Boston has been damaged for a long time to come. How's the weather in Florida Gary?

Ok, time to move on pal...

We got it the first time, WBZ did something that was questionable.
But you know? Last time I checked, this wasn't the "Protest against WBZ" board. So why don't you take your mission or your agenda or whatever somewhere else please?

Based on the number of times you've duplicated this topic, I'm starting to wonder if you don't have some connection with Flo Jonic.
Or maybe you are her. Either way, get a life, would ya?

Re: Ok, time to move on pal...

First, don't call me "pal" pal. If you think this incident is so inconsquential I hope you are not in the news business.

Secondly, I wouldn't know Flo Jonic if she were standing here in front of me.
She is not the issue. The issue is Freedom of The Press.

My original post was to link to the Herald story about Jonic's firing. Whether
it was politically motivated (pressure by FBI on WBZ?) or not (her past
clashes with station management) is in the eye of the beholder. Am guessing that if the subject of a post does directly involve radio (for example, let's say that the
Fairness Doctrine is re-instated) it probably belongs on a regular board but
if radio isn't directly involved maybe it should go to Off the Air. I hope the
moderators can decide where to go with this, and sometimes there's a fine line
between radio and purely political posts. The latter might be better off on
the Off the Air board or on a political discussion board like Democratic
Underground or Free Republic.

Although I too am often miffed at "Mr Lane's" postings, I think that, in this case, he is right and the critics are wrong. This time he IS talking about a serious issue--a very serious issue--one that should not be allowed to slip below the horizon. If we allow the government and corporate America to trample without protest on our right of free speech, there will soon be no America--at least not one worthy of the name! If you can't grasp that, you are not worthy of citizenship in this country. Over the past 230 years, tens of thousands of Americans have died to preserve the rights that the FBI wanted to to destroy and that WBZ management so readily surrendered. If you don't like reading Mr Lane's postings, whenever you see his name next to the title of a post, simply don't open it. That should solve your problem without causing you any discomfort. You sound numb enough that losing your freedom probably won't cause you any discomfort either. I pity you and all the others whose heads are buried in the sand. However, I also pity the rest of us, because your apathy and that of the many others like you is allowing the evil-doers (among whom, I include WBZ management) to destroy our liberties. Flo Jonic is not the issue; freedom of speech is. And your apathy about the destruction of our liberties is.

Mr. Nelson believes the equalizer too much....and not his "lying eyes".

So before you go off on AAR, the real issue here that parklane is making is that a good journalist was censored by a corporate operation. The real question is did WBZ Management make the decision or did Infinity Management make the decision?

The corporate media cowers in front of the Bush administration....the FBI is not doing a great job on homeland security and defending their own agents security so they lean on the station to keep their lazy progress out of the media..thats the real issue. (IMHO)

Jonic should not have been fired, maybe punished for the letter....but again WBZ had a golden opportunity to dump her so they took it. (IMHO)

ur person views creep into way too many posts

Hey Park, keep up the posts and keep defending Flo where you can.
This current government is so keen on redacting and closing doors where they
should be open. The current corporate media is weak in its resistance. An open press is a key foundation in this republic...keep defending it with all your strength.

Lets see if the media review shows pick up the Jonic story this weekend.

Ill lay gentle preditictions that the FOX News Watch team will probably ignore this as it relates to the bumbling actions of the Bush administration's FBI management. If they do take it on, they won't examine the real issue of censorship.

Id lay similar odds with CNN's media event with Howard Kurtz. Howard Kurtz will probably address this but he will agree with the Corporate Media.

Im curious as to the results this weekend...more to follow im sure

The "press" in question here WBZ. THEY chose not to run the story. Had it beens Flo's newspaper or radio station, SHE would have had the right to run the story or not.

So yes, your personal beef with WBZ is justified but don't hide behind your mission to defend the Freedom of The Press. That's like saying that ANY media outlet is guilty of not reporting ANY item that may or not be considered "news."

Choosing what airs and what doesn't airs in news happens EVERY DAY at EVERY news outlet in the good ole USA...example, if you or I got into a fender-bender on Tremont St, would WBZ report it on the news? Probably not, even if WBZ gets a fax from the Boston PD. Would YOU report it if you were ND @ WBZ? Probably not...but if it was Mayor Marble Mouth, you probably would, why? Because he is a high profile person? It doesn't matter why you chose to run or not run either story, the point is you have the CHOICE.

"Freedom of the Press is to prevent the Government from TELLING the medai what they can or can not report. WBZ was asked not to run the story, they weren't TOLD not to. It was WBZ's "freedom" to not run the story, regardless of how questionable their reasoning is or how big of a story this is.

By using your reasoning, if this story HAD run as a news story on WBZ, then every other media outlet be obligated to run it too, right? Would KISS 108 have to run it? JAMN 94.5, Mix, ZLX, et al?

Hate WBZ for doing soemething irks you as a news person, but don't make it out to be something it's not.
Edited by mistermicrophone on 08/06/05 08:43 PM.

And the guy behind the counter at Dunkin' Donuts can't believe how high coffee prices are but he still charges me the price on the sign...is he a victim of being censored by a corporate operation? No, he is doing his job as dictated by his boss.

Yawn...are you done yet? This argument is old and stale (IMHO).

If they guy at DD charges what "he feels is right", should he be fired? Of course.
