Day One of "Holiday" Ratings Month - All Christmas Stations in Double Digits

When we saw the December ratings, a few folks thought the All-Christmas format had started to slip. In some markets, the station that flips to All-Christmas music saw significant gains. But in other markets it didn't make much of a difference. Comparing December 2023 to 2024, it seemed the previous year saw better Christmas format ratings. But Lance Venta pointed out that Thanksgiving came later in 2024 which likely had an affect.

Now it's Day One of the release of Holiday 2024 ratings. All the secular Christmas stations hit double digit ratings. WLTW NYC, KOST LA, WLIT Chicago, KOIT SF, KDGE Dallas, KODA Houston and WBEB Philadelphia. (No secular station goes All-Christmas in Atlanta.) Is that equal to 2023? We'll have to see the analysis. But double-digits across the board is a sign that its fans are not tired of Christmas music.

In a few suburban markets, two All-Christmas stations finished first and second. That happened on Long Island (#1 WALK-FM and #2 WLTW) and in Middlesex NJ (#1 WLTW and #2 WMGQ).

Ranks and hitting a ten share mean nothing. They're just artificial goalposts.

With the exception of KODA Houston and WLTW in Middlesex/Somerset Union, EVERY Christmas leader was down year over year on Day 1. But as @Huff reminded me this year's Holiday book had a "leap week" so the Holiday book had an extra week into January.

In the second day of Nielsen's release of Holiday 2024 ratings, every large market secular Christmas station hit double digits, with one exception. WMJX Boston, KRWM Seattle, KESZ Phoenix, WNIC Detroit, KQQL Minneapolis, WDUV Tampa, KOSI Denver, KYXY San Diego, WLIF Baltimore and KEZK St. Louis all went above a 10 rating. WNIC and KEZK were especially impressive.

The one exception was WASH Washington, which only finished at #3 in the Nation's Capital Holiday ratings. Hmm, I wonder why? In years past, WASH was an easy #1. This time, it was the top music station, but it was behind NPR station WAMU and All-News WTOP. Was everyone in Washington still wrapped up in the election and new administration? Too preoccupied to hear White Christmas and Home for The Holidays? Classical WETA-FM, which plays a lot of holiday music, was #5. Rare to see a Classical station that high.

In Tampa, not only was WDUV #1 but WMTX, which also flips to Christmas music, was #2. While Tampa has two Christmas stations, Miami has none. Miami, Atlanta, Dayton and Knoxville are the large to medium markets with no secular full power Christmas station.
