Radio is a tough business. Anyone in it for any length of time has been hired and fired more than once. Few people make a decent living in radio. Many have moved on to more stable careers, but have never lost their love of radio. We remember the “good old days” when radio was not dominated by a few large money-grubbing corporations. We remember the early days of rock and soul, when music was not nearly as fragmented as it is today.
For 3-1/2 years WSWO-LP, also known as “Ultimate Oldies Radio”, has been playing the music of the 50s, 60s and early 70s. Not a few hundred tired oldies in endless repetition – but nearly 5,000 tunes. These low-power FM stations on FM97.7 and FM101.5 serve about 300,000 people from Kettering to Troy; from Xenia to New Lebanon. “Ultimate Oldies Radio” is operated by Southwestern Ohio Public Radio, a non-profit all-volunteer group. Donations pay the bills and absolutely no one draws a paycheck.
Do you want to get involved?
The station is always ready to take on more volunteers, especially those with experience in radio. Those volunteers pull air shifts in their spare time, train others to be announcers, help produce community announcements, go out in the community for live remote broadcasts, do high school play-by-play sports, and help with the many other tasks that are required to run a radio station.
