Dayton’s “Ultimate Oldies Radio” Has Room For Volunteers

Radio is a tough business. Anyone in it for any length of time has been hired and fired more than once. Few people make a decent living in radio. Many have moved on to more stable careers, but have never lost their love of radio. We remember the “good old days” when radio was not dominated by a few large money-grubbing corporations. We remember the early days of rock and soul, when music was not nearly as fragmented as it is today.

For 3-1/2 years WSWO-LP, also known as “Ultimate Oldies Radio”, has been playing the music of the 50s, 60s and early 70s. Not a few hundred tired oldies in endless repetition – but nearly 5,000 tunes. These low-power FM stations on FM97.7 and FM101.5 serve about 300,000 people from Kettering to Troy; from Xenia to New Lebanon. “Ultimate Oldies Radio” is operated by Southwestern Ohio Public Radio, a non-profit all-volunteer group. Donations pay the bills and absolutely no one draws a paycheck.

The station is always ready to take on more volunteers, especially those with experience in radio. Those volunteers pull air shifts in their spare time, train others to be announcers, help produce community announcements, go out in the community for live remote broadcasts, do high school play-by-play sports, and help with the many other tasks that are required to run a radio station.

Yeah good luck with that.

You know, if I were in the area and had a few extra hours in my schedule, I'd totally go for it.

Thank you for making this post pbr. I certainly appreciate you taking the time to advertise the station and offer volunteer positions. Due to the fact that I live about 650 miles away, I cannot volunteer. The good news is: I do visit the Dayton area several times each year, and I now have an FM Oldies station to listen to instead of just Oldies 1160 WDJO on AM.

Have a couple of questions...I use a Nady Starpower SP-1 microphone which is used by a lot of musicians. It has a frequency response of 80 to 12,000 Hz. I am also using Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and record voicers at a 44100 sample rate max (no lower than 32000)at 16 bit resolution. Is that considered broadcast quality?

Also, are there any plans to audiostream soon?

Glad to hear Brad Lovett back on the air. Any other former ULMrs considereing to volunteer their talents and pipes on the air? Bob Roberts,Dale Grimm,Marco Simmons and Joe Madigan (currently up at Cleveland's WJCU) are just a few of 'em that worked on the air there.

Your recording setup sounds more than good enough to record announcements. Many of our "Community Calendar" announcements are recorded at their homes by volunteers. Interested? If so, send an email to [email protected] .

No plans to stream music on the internet anytime soon. The cost to stream music is prohibitive; and the payback would be uncertain. The only streaming we do is high school football.

Do you have a website?

We welcome Justin, a recent International College of Broadcasting graduate who just completed training at our station. He will be doing a Friday 3-7pm afternoon drive-time shift starting next week on Ultimate Oldies Radio.

He is a talented individual. We hope his volunteer experience with us will help him move on to a successful career in radio.
