Dayton Area Broadcaster's Hall Of Fame Announces 2011 Induction Class

Dr. Creep and Carl Day gets my vote!

I might add a suggestion...a tribute to Stanley Coning who owned the former WCTM Eaton and passed away over the Christmas holidays.

Nice job with the site upgrade...no more 404 errors or non-existant pages.

Awesome!

Awesome!

Carl Day has already been inducted, and rightfully so, though Dr. Creep is to be inducted this year.

We have a new web program which automatically checks the links and memorizes, if you will, their locations on the site, thus eliminating the old 404 errors...

What about a vote for Paul F. Braden? I guess Middletown broadcast founder should qualify. It's close proximity to Dayton. And now that WPFB is in different hands, it would be a nice gesture of legacy. He was the engineer at WING in the 40s and built WPFB from scratch. Also, he was the first to install stereo on his 105.9 FM.

Just a suggestion for all your suggestions...

If you haven't yet, read the criteria for induction consideration. Now, you have to be a member in good standing to nominate. (pay your annual $25 dollar annual dues.)

Then, if you have someone to nominate, you have to meet a number of specific criteria (years in broadcasting, years in broadcasting in Dayton, etc.) But, there's one thing few ever seem to get. It's not enough to be on the air the required number of years...it's not enough to have garnered top ratings, or been on the air in the market 25-30 years...or been a kindly station owner...

The person making the nomination must speak to what the nominated individual did for the community off the air. Was he/she an Elder in their church? Did he/she offer a Junior Achievement program at the radio station? Did he/she use their station to raise needed funds for charity in the community? Was he/she on their local Priority Board, etc.

I don't think anyone on the Board at the Hall Of Fame (who decides who goes in), for instance ever questioned that Gene "By Golly" Barry deserved induction (2009). But no one who ever nominated him (until I did) ever came up with verifiable information about what he did off the air in the community. And that has to be part of the equation...or you won't get a nomination through.

There have been many deserving people nominated who don't pass muster for this very reason.

So, if you are a member (or decide to become one), please take my advice and do some research on your nominee and be able to speak to both aspects of your candidate...what they did on air and off the air.

Kevin, not sure what Mr. Braden did for the community in the form of charity. I was looking at the broadcast pioneer angle. He brought radio service to Middletown in the late 40s using his own money and experience. I'd assume that he gave more to the community. I live too far away to research Paul Braden's achievements. Maybe someone reading would have some background to share with the board. Just a thought.

Les, I don't know that much about the history of WPFB other than they have had some very talented people working there such as Moon Mullins, Lowell Thomas, Warren Johnson and Mike McMurray and does anyone remember the orginal Good Guys Show? Who did that show?
