DC's news stations do a great job after the storm, unlike 101.9 after Irene

I listened to both of DC's news stations this weekend and noticed that both of them had excellent coverage about the effects of the thunderstorm on Friday night.

I remember listening to FM News 101.9 after the hurricane last year, and I distinctly remember hearing some entertainment gossip, and not as good coverage as WCBS and WINS. Like really, a hurricane just hit and my power is out, I really want to know what color Angelina Jolie's dress is tonight.

WNEW-FM 99.1 is basically the WINS of DC, Maryland, Virginia in the Market and WTOP-FM is like the WCBS-AM and KCBS-FM in the DC area. I listened to both of them recently and they are good. I know KCBS-FM is permitted to air both WNEW-FM and WTOP-FM content for some reports.

FM News 101.9 airing Jolie TMZ gossip right after the East Coast Quake and Hurricane. OK I hope Cumulus takes WEMP-FM. I know in Atlanta WYAY the Cumulus O&O formats their all-news station after WTOP-FM, KCBS-FM and WCBS-AM. They use the 1-hour cycle.

WYAY All News 106.7 in Atlanta uses a 30 minute news format. The only difference between the two 30 minute segments in an hour is one segment has 60 seconds more of ABC News.

I know WYAY carry 2 Networks the ABC-I News and the Fox 5 News via WAGA-TV and its set up like WTOP-FM where they carry WJLA ABC7 News along with CBS Radio News. If 101.9 FM Merlin does not get its act together then I hope Cumulus flip them into WABC-FM News/Talk 101.9 and make them have local Talk and drive time news like KGO-AM prior to the 2011 change. Also the talk hosts on 101.9 must lure in the younger audiences 24-54 like KGO has attempted to do. They must have more of a Brian Copeland and Monty type hosts on 101.9 FM. Also for 101.9 to increase their Cumes they must Cross promote the station with WABC7 in NYC for the hourly News updates the same way that KGO-TV's staff would do reports for KGO-AM for some segments.

To eliminate any confusion as to who owns what in the NYC area:

Cumulus: WABC-AM-770 NYC Talk; WPLJ-FM-95.5 NYC Hot AC; WFAS-AM-1230 White Plains AC/Talk; WFAS-FM-103.9 Bronxville AC

Disney: WEPN-AM-1050 Sports/WEMP-FM-98.7 Sports-simulcast (FM leased from Emmis);
WQEW-AM-1560 Radio Disney/Childrens
WABC-TV Channel 7

Merlin Media: WEMP-FM-101.9 All-News (no talk shows as of now)

While Cumulus and Disney do share some programming elements via the old Citadel alliances before Cumulus bought out Citadel
(such as when Ch. 7 weatherman Bill Evans + Ch. 7 traffic reporter Joe Nolan had appeared on Scott + Todd's WPLJ Morning Show),
there are no synergies between Merlin Media and any other NYC area media companies.
Merlin does use some material from the national ABC News + Entertainment services.
