Dead carriers on 99.1 and 100.1 south of Rutland VT

I was in Rutland VT area over the weekend and noticed dead air/dead carrier signals at 99.1 and
100.1 (especially on US 7 near Wallingford)...any idea what those are? Are they possibly
TIS signals that were powered up but no programming, etc.
 
One of the "Holy Rollers" had a translator at 100.1 around Rutland at one time and I know that is long since gonzo. That signal originated from Boardman Hill. Maybe you were picking up someone's XM or Sirius radios that were not factory installed in a vehicle closeby to yours ?
 
It's possible but the funny thing is that I was also noticing the dead air signal while in my hotel
(the Rodeway Inn on US 7 just n of the US 4 intersection)...on an analog radio it seemed to be
99.1 or 100.1 or something. The digital readout on my car stereo did point out the 99.1 and
100.1 freqs.

btw remember the days of Radio Free Vermont? I used to pick it up at 96.5 before they got shut down
(and they used to run ads--at one point I went by "Airport Driving Range" which was one of their
"sponsors")...maybe someone has a pirate operation going and just had no programming on it at the
time. I know VT Highway or some agency had some LPFMs, and still may, and thought it may have
been one of those...

And in case it was my OWN FM re-transmitter, well, that one only broadcasts on 88.1 to 88.7
so that would have been impossible.
 
btw this page lists LPFMs and it does mention 100.1s in Bellows Falls (WOOL-LP) and Randolph
but I was nowhere near those places. There was no way in hell that the Randolph TIS, if it's
still on--WRAN-LP, I think--could reach Rutland. This was a very strong signal. Who knows,
could have been a car nearby, but then why the reception while in my motel?

Unless my Toyota somehow has the power to send out those signals :)

The WOOL-LP fm transmitter is up on Fall Mtn in New Hampshire, where 96.3 (WPLY?) is located. I tend to think that it would go through all the giant hills between there and Rutland.
 
Correct me. I was going to say that I doubt it could travel all the way through the mountains up there.
 
If it was a Pamal signal, you probably would hear a lot of PSA's between the dead air.. Is it me, or is that "Passing Gas" PSA "Lighting up" the PSA rotation.. ::) Couldn;t resist... ;D

I'm just clowning around on my rebuttal of "Dudeman's" comments, though the "Passing Gas" PSA's are heard with a lot of regularity on WSYB, WEBK, and the Pow Pow Powerhouse of Zeee 97. At least put a station promotional announcement in there, and putting the kabosh on the downfalls of excessive flatulance.

I honestly can't see any of those LP 100.1 either from Randolph or Bellows Falls making it over the mountains into the pristine hamlet of Wallingford. But then again, the magic of geography can do interesting things. I can perfectly pick up WLKZ 104.9 in Wolfboro NH on table radio in my house easily more than 100 miles away from the transmitter with just a dipole antenna. Even with an amp, rooftop antenna, and a high elevation once upon a time, I did all I could to pull in world famous W284AB from atop Stratton Mountain which is also known as the 104.7 translator for 101 The Fox.. Same goes for the VPR translators in Manchester on 92.5 and 93.5..
 
Looks like the radio dial is quiet at 100.1 in Rutland, so not sure where that signal is from. However, looks like there's a 'new' (according to Radio-Locator.com) 99.1 in Lake George, NY WCKM. Looks like the signal definitely reaches into Rutland.
 
WCKM is still at 98.5 FM, not sure when that is supposed to move up the dial to 99.1 if that's even going to happen at all.
 
Yeah, looks like it's been two years since they applied for the permit. Seems these things are done quickly or never get done at all.
 
Not sure how accurate the info is but it says the CP for WCKM at 99.1 expired 10/20/08 but maybe
there was an extension--and the fringe area of the signal does include south of Rutland, so maybe
tests were being done.
 
It Expires 10/20/2008, 11 months from now. We're still in 2007! =)
 
Ah! D'oh! We're talking so much about '08, as in the upcoming Presidential primaries, that
I forgot we still have some '07 to go through! :)
