Dean, Rog & Grego To Be Part Of KIAH's "Newsfix"

KIAH/39's new reformatted nightly newscast "Newsfix" debuts next week. And there will be a couple of radio ties to the program.

Among the new segments being featured is "The Day In Music," which will be hosted by Dean & Roger of 107.5 The Eagle's morning show. In addition, "Newsfix" will be narrated by former KLOL personality Grego, aka Gregory Onofrio, who will also appear for a nightly "Closing Comments" segment (think Springer's "Final Thoughts").

Where did TV "news" ever go? I watch an entire hour or thirty minutes of a news "show" to see five minutes of actual news, weather and sports. The rest of the time is spent on talking about the latest outrageous act of some "entertainer" (that I could care less about) or other non-news items. If I wanted to hear about that kind of what I call "junk news", I would tune in the E channel or keep up with the Kardashians; neither of which I do. So, why do I want to listen to a bunch of radio jocks filling up time. I can get that on the radio the next morning, while they're only playing two songs per hour.

Meanwhile, worthwhile local news is tossed in the trash can or left on the cutting room floor by a news editor that hasn't graduated college yet. I think the problem lies in the fact that no TV station in Houston wants to cover local news, anymore. They don't want to spend the money on reporters, photographers and trucks. Instead, they get their content from the internet and Hollywood; and try to convince us that that's all the news there is.

Please. Give me a break. In the words of the immortal Joe Friday, "Just the facts ma'am. Just the facts".

As someone who had the misfortune of working in the same building with Grego at 510 Lovett Blvd when he was at KLOL in the early 90s, unless he's had a brain transplant since then, I can say the fact that he's even on KIAH's payroll tells me everything I need to know about that what's going on there.

Beyond that, deponent sayeth not.

One can argue that the logic of the folks at Tribune thinking that an automated (read: no live anchors) newscast is going to work, is about as vacant as the 510 Lovett building that you speak of...

Dean and Rog will have about as much impact on Houston TV news as KSEV does on KTRH. Give me a break.

KTRH has news?

KTRH is anemic when it comes to news with the exception being in morning drive. KSEV is anemic when it comes to talk and Dean and Rog doing news will probably be as successful as Dave and Gina trying to do Entertainment Tonight.

That Newsfix is such crap... Its like TMZ trying to bring you the so-called news. Hopefully the ratings will tank. I actually didn't mind the old 39 news. It was decent enough. The talent wasn't super great, but they did try very hard to do a good job.

The ratings on 39's old news were in the tank and they never really got above a 2 in any demo, but this crap they have now is likely to drop to the 0's in all demos and I boldly predict the end of 39's News by the middle of summer if not sooner. I do hand it to their GM for keeping news at any cost to avoid layoffs per Tribune's dictate. Tribune offered this as a way to keep "news" and not having to fire their entire news dept, although that is inevitable.

My question is what good is this news format when the next flood or hurricane comes to town?

I sure miss Mia Gradney....

The 39 disaster in the making is the brainchild of Lee Abrams, late of WLS fame until a pesky predilection cost him his key to the executive men's room. 39's Snooozefix is his latest try at getting the lightning back in the bottle......just one more time.
I am a little surprised at the number of slams against conservative values by Mr. Gregorio, who's pulling that chain?

Abrams created the Z-Rock radio format, which built a cult following before crashing and burning in the 90s.

Would "Newsfix" qualify as KIAH's programming "serving the public interest"?
