Death of April Fools Radio Jokes

Can anyone recall a truly funny, memorable, got you w/your pants down April Fools Prank performed by a Buffalo Radio Station? There are probably some legendary ones, but this seems to be lost in 21st century radio....

I truly can't imagine these days , with numerous communication options and internet/web presence, that radio based pranks still actually work! All those silly format changes (i recall WJYE having a "computer malfunction", playing Wild Thing, by Tone Loc 1/2 way through Fleetwood Mac, "Gas" sales, money promotions, etc.

One of my favorite silly things that Kiss 985 would do is play their "Top 10" show w/all the guilty pleasure songs "New Kids on the Block", "Vanilla Ice"!!!!

one year when kiss had sam malone in mornings they had a prank with something about the water and being contaminated with something. I forget the details but I think I was like 15 or so. I remember telling my mom, my sister and going to school and telling everyone. Then we found out it was a prank. GRRRRRRRR, I was afraid to take a shower that day LOL

FWIW, Scott Fybush and I were seriously thinking of bringing back WVWA "NIIIIINNNNEEEEE!!!!!" Pound Ridge for the day on WEOS. But really, a prank of that magnitude deserves serious attention and I didn't have time to round up some accomplices from 635 Mass Ave in DC. ;D Next year, perhaps. Ought to work well for WITH since its frequency will be 90.1
::)

We had a lot of fun doing Bearman's "Fool's Parade" at the old Fox. Got all of us in there that morning...Shredd, Opie, Bensson...did the whole show through a Marti unit from the studio to give it the sound that we were all outside. There were times that we were peeing ourselves.

Had folks show up on the waterfront to get a look-see. Great theater of the mind.

The idea was so cool...I stole it when I went to Greenville, SC. Had TV trucks going up and down Main Street looking for guys in Lederhosen drinking tall ones and eating sausages at the "Lirpa Loof Festival."

The Jokes On...

Hey, I remember when we had the mid-day, evening, and overnight talent pre-tape the talk parts of their shows, pre-produced their shifts, and had them show up in different places around town while they were "on the radio".

Oh, wait....

Best one I can remember from my teens, it was in the mid 80's when the staff of the old 103 WPHD "went on strike" as their "labor agreement" expired at midnight on March 31st.

With the jocks "on strike", fans were treated to an April 1st reunion of the 97 Rock staff (96.9 was in its easy listening format).

i recall one of the coolest, was when Shredd/Ragan were
on mornings, and NO ONE would relieve them!!

they worked thru, mid-day's; afternoons, and then...finally
i think (blast,from the past--kit missle,?/eternal one, *showed up*)
and they could go home... (SIDEBAR: a cool thread, where are they now?)
*michelle,the eternal one/kit-missle, girl friday/angry hero?* i have
"heard" this and that, but some one , im sure,(maybe the source) can
give me an update!!! thx

cool thing about that was, they played "requests" I'm sure, they had
some playlist, but did seem to break out some real "gems" and...
as they put it (on their own show/station) people were talking about it,
for a long time, since they played songs...that were "forbidden"
(not guilty pleasures) but, songs, that u just didnt play, album-length cuts,
or B sides, versus/in favor of the preferred HIT by the artists/rock group.

now what is fuuuny:
they never said, (actually NEVER SAID ON AIRE) it was an april's fools gag:
they played along *SO WELL* that they believed it...and, always would comment
on it, as if it were a FLUKE, that no one would come to work...

I have worked at stations pulling April fools pranks. One station, the afternoon guy and morning switched shifts but not names, same as mid day and night. WKLX in Rochester switched to an all disco format for the day. The phone lines lit up. There was a lot of passion on the phones. Some for and some against move. I couldn't believe how many people didn't catch on to the gag.

..."the famous"..

what about the "famous" craig and company
"supposedly," saying the -F-bomb, or
"some four letter word" never meant for the air waves,
...
but their punch line, just was...they left - no,
"gotcha" tag...so, was that a stunt, or untimely
stupidity?

twist :

along the lines of, all disco, or completely, different
jocks, for the "wrong name" ( classic, by the way ; )

101.1,the river's morning man, played the same song...
..?artist/..."splitting hairs"(or the song, with some
name of splitting hairs) over and over. i believe,
if memory serves me right - he would FRONT Sell,
other artists, *BUT* still play, the same song, over and over.

further more, put callers on the aire, and act as if - they were the "crazy" one...
naah, not sure what u are talking about...finally, after about an hour, he
revealed those famous words:
"april fool's !!!"
