Death to another Beautiful Music station, this time in Killeen, Texas

I just received a tweet from @KNCTFM, and according to them, they will switch to an all rock format on April 2. Bad news for Beautiful Music lovers in the Central Texas area. When I was a kid, my family and I lived in Killeen, TX. My father was stationed in Fort Hood in the early to mid 1980s, and during his leisure time, he would listen to the Beautiful Music of KNCT FM. Very interesting music to listen to.

Not sure if they are pulling the legs of their listeners, given today's abounding foolishness, but Central Texas College's KNCT 91-3 is tweeting out a format change tomorrow that will see the Killeen non-comm go from one of the last Beautiful Music stations in the State to a rock formatted facility. If true, so sad that another B/EZ station is raising the white flag.

These nonprofits have to bring in money somehow if they want to stay alive. Look at 90.1 KPFT in Houston. Government money all but gone. Listenership down. Pledges dried up to a trickle. Heard that Joe Olsteen offered Pacifica $5M for it. So far it hasn't been sold, but with the decline of radio listening among young people (and radical rebellous younsters have long been KPFTs main base) who knows how long they can survive. KPFT would probably get more monetary support as an oldies station...
 
Checking the KNCT website, it would not load nor time out. This makes me think there may be something to this. I hate to see KNCT go, if they are indeed changing. It does seem jumping in to the rock arena with all the variations represented, that this would be a tougher market to grab and monetiize. Maybe Classic Rock? Austin and north through Waco are void of the format if I recall correctly.

I believe you're right, Bill. KLTD is about as close as it gets to classic rock in that area, and it's actually classified as a classic hits station. A good classic rock station might just be what the doctor ordered in Killeen/Ft. Hood. Still...sad to see Central Texas lose a format that is no longer readily available on the dial pretty much anywhere. Guess this means the 102-1 translator in Burnet will be following suit with the parent KNCT....

..again, only if the tweet actually holds water. We'll know for certain tomorrow.
 
102-1 in Burnet is actually paired up with KAJZ (smooth jazz), or was last I heard it, earlier this year.

I did like some of the songs I heard on KNCT, however if it flips to rock it will be unique. Many non-comms play indie, but if it's mainstream rock on a non-comm, that's not too popular. Still, rock does generate a lot of attention.
 
Sure rock gets plenty of attention and you are right, indie rock works well on non-comms. Austin is already quite an eclectic market with so many choices that would reach up to KNCT's backyard that I wonder just how well they could do. There's KDRP, KUTX, KROX and KGSR off the top of my mind (including the roots oriented KDRP in the mix). Recently The Fringe format was dropped opting for classic hits.
 
For those who haven't tuned in, it was an April Fools joke after all.
