Dees and Roy Back Together Again At One Of The Failing CBS Properties!

Is Dees going to do mornings on Jack-FM?

Or maybe replace Bonaduce?

Different times and different circumstances.

Roy's stock is up and Dees' is down.

Dees missed his big chance when he big-timed KRTH and hitched his wagon to something that was (not) Movin. Now Dees has proved he is not relevant to the new generation but will have to eat a tremendous amount of crow to even get the opportunity to re-introduce himself to the old one.

Likely scenario here is Laugh-in goes after KIIS with a newly launched 97.1 station, with Dees in morning drive, still trying to prove his relevance. I'm sure Movin will be glad to get out from under his costly contract by that time. FM talk may still be doing well (billing wise) in LA, but a dearth of new talent in the format and PPM realities make this a format living on borrowed time. Thus 97.1 becomes the likely candidate to challenge KIIS.

But what is Dees going to bring to the table when Ryan has the ability to recap American Idol for five months of the year, not to mention all the other stuff he is involved in that he can easily cross-promote? For better or worse, he has established is brand, and it is strong.

When Dees launched on Movin, I expected a rejuvenated Dees with fresh bits and a new attitude. What we got was the same old routines, Spanglish presentation (Ricardo Diaz in lan Manana! Ole!), a super-weak sidekick who practically had to be cued to talk at the right time, and the early hours still obviously voicetracked from the previous day so he doesn't have to show up live. For someone who had such a stong legacy to protect, it was sad how he went about it. It was (is) unlistenable.

Dees is the only thing on that station that gets any numbers at all.

He has proved his value. It's not his fault that people who like Snap don't want to hear Donna Summer and vice versa.

You're going to have to back up your statement that his has proved his value to Emmis. Tell us what ranking his morning numbers were in the just released pre-currency July PPM. Then tell us if the millions he's costing Emmis makes his time in mornings at Emmis a success.

Channel Flipper got it right on. I just want to add that Dees embarASSed himself in the Movin "butt" ads. He made himself look like the old guy who is well on his way to 60 that he is. He's not hip, he's not funny, he's not relevant. He had his time but its over. Forever.

Interesting, but the July PPM Numbers show Dees in 29th Place 12+ while the station M-S 6a-12M is in 28th place - thus he does worse than the station overall.

And let's not remember how much KIIS's mornings numbers went up in 5 books with Ryan after Dees departed.

As Scott Shannon said 20 years ago in LA, "I might not be the best DJ, but at least I show up on time every morning".

Right after Randy Michaels did the deal for Gannett/KIIS, he told other big name talent in Jacor "I just met someone that is so in the twilight of his career.....Rick Dees".

I am amazed he lasted as long as he did.

Bottom Line - Dan Mason brought Roy in to get cash flow going before he departs in 20 months so he can get his big payout. That DOES NOT include paying out for high priced talent, especially talent with those kind of numbers.

Rig burned far too many bridges with people using them when he needed them. He has made a tremendous amount and had a tremendous career, but he needs to go enjoy the rest of his life on his Horse Farm in Kentucky where he used to broadcast on KIIS from. He's earned it and no reason to further embarrass himself.

Jack's success is very much based on the rejection by a segment of the audience of traditional DJs and Morning Yukkers. In their place, Weatherly has done a marvelous job of imaging and creating instantaneouls content from the phoners. It's a finely crafted station and does not need live talent at this moment.

Dees has zero fit on Jack.

Oh David..... :p you must really lack shame. :-\

Months, ago I suggested KMVN challenge KIIS. You screamed and shouted and rambled off numbers and protested about how it couldn't work. I told you that you were wrong, and now it appears you agree I am correct.

*wonders very aloud*
IS THIS YOU AGREEING SOMEONE SHOULD CHALLENGE KIIS?

You are such a flip flopper.

To KMVN... ( I know you are reading this so I will be direct) this is your last chance. You could combo sell the *&^% out of KPWR and the all new ____93.9! WTF are u waiting for? You got caught with your pants down. This is your one last chance to redeem yourself Pull your heads out of your asses, before you financially lose them. Redemption does not happen often. Waiting another day or even hour at this point could be dangerous. What happens within the next two weeks will fiscally shake up the Los Angeles radio landscape. PPM is here. You don't have to beat KIIS, to make it work. KSLX has nothing to lose.

Flip now...hurry..chop chop. Oh and GOODBYE DEE's we hardly knew you were back. C-Ya!

Yes, now that the PPM shows several stations with eminently fragmentable shares. In the diary, a 4 share divided in half meant two 2-share stations, or a Pyrrhic victory.

You are such a flip flopper.

In the PPM, there are 6 shares for PPM and enough for either a direct assault or a fragger and a 3 is enough for a $30 million sales level... or greater.

Until a few weeks ago, we did not immagine KIIS would benefit from the PPM to the extent of a 50% increase in share. And now they are a target of major proportions... like KROQ and KCBS-FM.

Obviously, they are aware that Roy and 97.1 are going to flip. There is not room for 3 CHRs in LA.

If one was a forward thinker, a strategizer, such as Clear Channel was about the PPM for Los Angeles, they would have made or suggested formatic adjustments BEFORE the pre-currency PPM results for Los Angeles were even released. There was plenty of data available to suggest what was to come. Nobody needs to suggest KIIS needs a challenger now. It's quite obvious but it was a long time ago as well. Just think how far ahead of the game Emmis would be now if they had made Movin a CHR or Adult CHR. Instead, Emmis is just all that much closer to their demise.

Actually, you didn't suggest that KMVN challenge KIIS. You said it was GOING to happen. You even had an image logo for it: FM 94. Would you like me to pull your own quote?

BTW, there's an awful lot of months gone by between your posts. What's the matter? Couldn't stand the heat? Or was it being trumped by actual facts and figures? :D

Being hardly known is better than never being known at all. Please fill us in on your storied background sometime.

Seems with a screen name like yours, you're the one lacking shame. David Eduardo has more knowledge about the business than any 10 of us.

Yeah, there was that data from Houston, the only MRC accredited market, that suggested that Cumulus was very smart because they moved KRBE away from CHR and towards a more Hot AC position. The fact that the move worked does not seem to have impressed anyone.

Since PPM seems to be providing a slightly different view in each market, nobody could have forecast the KIIS surge. One thing to keep in mind is that the effect of LA being about 55% Hispanic in 18-34 could not really be projected into pre-PPM thinking as no market with similar ethnicity had been surveyed by the PPM.

Sure, lots of stations are making PPM methodology adjustments prior to the arriva of data, but few stations are really making huge format changes without first seeing some data.

Just to get the discussion back to the original post, Roy sees Dees as the past, not the future. He won't be bringing Rick back.

David E. may be knowledgeable, but more than any 10 people here? Mr. Kabrich needs to check in right about now, I think.

Dees was tied for eighth in adults 25-54 when he was canned in 2003, according to an article in R&R.

Seacrest has been in the top five in the same demo for most of his tenure, and occassionally reached #1.

In 2002 he was between 7th and 11th in the 4 books. 2003 started with 9th in Winter and 11th in Spring.

I do believe that CBS may have learned their lesson about putting talent in AM drive on JACK. Look at Steve Dahl in Chicago. The numbers dropped way below the station average. So it would be very unwise to mess with something that is working?
