Delilah Comes To Evenings At WLTW 106.7 FM

What local flavor can there be in a realtionship show? I'm sort of asking both how you would do this and why it would be important in that kind of show.

"Delilah, this past weekend my boyfriend took me for a walk thru Central Park, and that's where he proposed to me...Can you play him a special song?"

"Delilah, theres a guy I see on the ferry every afternoon on the way home to Bayonne(sp?)...and I don't have the confidence to say anything to him, what do you suggest?"

"Delilah, I wanted to say thank you for playing our song last night. While it was snowing in the city, we stayed cuddled up in front of the fire listening to you and all the songs seemed like they were for us in front of the fire...while the snow fell."

The callers usually don't mention their location.

Of course not...because in it's current state...it's a generic-ized syndicated show.

If it was local, it wouldn't be a problem to mention locales.

That kind of stuff is, generally, not how people speak. And it actually distracts from the content of the call.

...very good. You sound like a midwestern woman mentioning NY. locals.

LOL....since I'm neither Midwestern or a woman....I'm not sure how I managed that.

But romantic spots, seasonal issues (i.e..foliage trips, going to the Poconos, etc), can all be part of relationship content. All adding to local flavor.

And yes David, "people" don't speak like that, but women DO.

Uggghhh!! I am as outraged as the rest of you! What are they thinking?! Delilah is definately going to ruin the Lite at Nite that JJ Kennedy had built up so well. And how about the coffee clutch they have going on in the morning?! Just think, if you tune in to WLTW first thing in the morning you can begin your day with the stomach souring giggling and gossiping, and then, tune in to Delilah and let your stomach turn some more and you will be on your way to vomit in no time!!

Hey, most women dig this stuff! Gossip, sap, etc.

Actually, women don't speak that way. Nor do "people." They just say, "while I was on my way to work" or "when I was going to pick up my boyfriend. "

Nobody says, "While I was on the Staten Island Ferry on my way to work" because people don't say the things that are obvious to them... such as the way they have been going to work for the last 5 years.

And they don't say "when I was going to pick up my boyfriend in Midtown." If the boyfriend works in Midtown, that is obvious and not mentioned.

Localization, as has been said, is not in "name dropping" places and roads and landmarks, nor is it in reporting news most people could give two rat droppings about. Localization is hitting the heartstrings of listeners, or taking about something they care about... or even playing the songs that a local music test proved the most popular. Otherwise, we could be the epitome of localization and read the phone book.

I *hate* sap, and I *hate* Delilah's show.

Just one woman's opinion. ::)

Living in New York myself I believe that to be the general consensus among alot of women in this city.
One of the reasons I don't see Delilah as a successful program in this market.
Certainly WLTW covers areas of the Metropolitan area where listenership for such programs could do ok but WLTW is a powerhouse in NYC. and putting a foreign sounding program such as Delilah on the air, evenings or not is playing with fire.

Intelligent women, (and I consider myself one) find Delilah's show just as nauseating and
eye-rollingly unbearable as men do. Maybe the problem is that the men who run the industry lump
all women into a gossip and sappiness category and I think they would be surprised to
learn that's not the case. There's a certain type of woman her show caters to, the
rest of us just find it insulting. Women in NY are more Sex in the City (even if they're married
with kids) than they are Touched By An Angel (gag). WLTW, has failed us.
Kind of like a cell phone with an ad campaign that tries
to entice me by comparing it to chocolate.
Do men really think women are that dumb?

Sex in the city vs. Touched by an angel sums it up well.

In response to your question..unfortunately since the decision to put Delilah on the NY airwaves came from Clear Channel in San Antonio, TX I believe that the answer is, given the location of the decision makers, "yes".

They most certainly do.

As much as you'd like David, women do not speak like they are having an aircheck session.
It's a proven fact that women talk more...and use more words when telling a story than a man.

Women include ALL the details...and much more extraneous material.

It is not obvious to the person listening to the story.

And while they might not say "the Ferry to Bayonne", they might say "The Ferry"...and everyone locally might just know what she means. (Something that would be applicable to NYC....and not to Kansas City.)

Again, extra information helps enhance the story. Can you imagine yourself on a Ferry? The motor humming? The bad coffee? The boredom....you find yourself staring at a guy, etc.

They might not use the word "Midtown" or "Manhatten"...but people in NJ sometimes say "going into the city". (Locally people know what that entails....bumper to bumper, parking, maybe getting lost...and that might be vital to the story...if she made a big effort to come in for lunch....and he didn't appreciate it? etc.)

No, it is not the same as 'name-dropping'...but it is in the subtle nuances that come from being in the market. Do they say "highway 102" or "route 102". Do they say "soda" or "tonic". And, as those who have worked in talk radio have found...people like hearing callers from their town...or nearby towns.

and watch LTW's ratings tumble as midwestern sap hits the NYC. airwaves.
Unbelievable...no really, I'm absolutely speechless.
They are playing with the no. 1 rated station in the no. 1 market.

I agree I cant believe they're TRYING to sabotage themselves this foolishly. It aint broke, why frickeing fix it?!. Mid western sap is the perfect description of it. She's a nut case. I remember when she started her career at the now defunkt lite ac in Boston where she did nights, and was blown out because she refused to play any alcohol spots being a recovering addict etc. What a fricken nut case!.

What's wrong with that? I applaude her for her stance. [EDIT]. Do you know how many people die on the roads in the USA because of DWI? Do you know how many families are torn apart by alcohol? A hell of a lot more people die in Iraq!!!!!!

I did not get a chance to listen to the show last night. How many segments of her contents were played in each hour last night?

For the 5 minutes I listened she talked about a family that made window frames in their house from the sawed off part of the bottom of the tree trunks of their Christmas trees as a Christmas family tradition.
This is when I knew it was time to turn the dial.

Haa..haaa that's funny! [EDIT]. Talk all you want after the ratings come out. You can
speculate all you want. I agree she does have a sappy midwestern feel but a lot of women dig that. Maybe not all of the URBAN WOMEN IN NYC, but there;s enough of the sappy types on Long Island, Jersey, etc

I love the way all you radio people think you know what the audience wants. This is why radio sucks and plays little roles in peoples lifes. Only the lowest common denominator is being programmed to in radio.

I am glad you see what I see, she sucks and there is nothing redeeming in her!!! She is the sap of all saps, she gets you a nausea feeling just listening to her whining.

Plus, the all XMAS music just makes it worse, although her cup of tea because the music is sappy like her. ]

Can't wait til the 26th!!! However, it still won't change her program.

Do men really think women are that dumb?

But by extension, would today's "intelligent women" (particularly those of and below the Sex and the City demo--Kim Cattrall not excluded) even go for a station labelled "Lite"? Face it; whatever the station's success, that's a lethal label this side of Stepford. It isn't that WLTW "failed you"; it's that, to quote Glen Quagmire, "why are you still here?" Said "men who run the industry" thought they'd smoked you out *ages* ago.

Under those circumstances, Delilah is sadly suited to WLTW because, well, that's what's become of the preferred active saleable listening demographic. And it's no more "incongruous" than all that conservative talk in a liberal town.

So think of it as a reality check--"why are you still here", indeed...
