Della Reese - Tess in Touched by an Angel dies at 86

Della Reese, best known for her role as Tess, in CBS' "Touched by an Angel" and "Promised Land" died Sunday after a lengthy illness. She was 86.

Reese's musical career began in Detroit, with her discovery by gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. She signed a recording contract in 1953 with Jubilee Records, and released the songs "In the Still of the Night," "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm," and "Time After Time."

Several years later, she began to make a transition into acting, which led to her greatest fame. After the end of her eponymous talk show "Della," she was the first black woman to guest host The Tonight Show w/ Johnny Carson. She appeared in several miniseries and television shows, most notably appearing as the mother of B.A. Baracus in The A-Team, did voiceover work for Hanna-Barbera and in one of her most famous roles, did a fight scene with Eddie Murphy in the 1989 comedy "Harlem Nights."

In 1993, she was approached by CBS to play an older female lead in a then-unnamed drama, which eventually became known as "Touched by an Angel." Reluctantly, she auditioned for the role. Initially wanting a one-shot agreement between CBS and creator/producer Martha Williamson, Williamson ordered more episodes. Reese co-starred with Roma Downey for ten years, the show's final episode aired in 2003. The show was seen in reruns on PAX and the Hallmark Channel. Reese was a recurring character on the Touched by an Angel spinoff "Promised Land", starring Gerald McRaney and Wendy Phillips.

After Touched by an Angel wrapped production in 2003, she went on to guest star in movies and TV shows such as "Beauty Shop," "That's So Raven," and "The Young and the Restless."

There have been no announcements on funeral arrangements.

I didn't really watch "Touched by an Angel" but I did watch "Promised Land".

I knew her best from "Chico and the Man" where Jack Albertson was a grouchy old man and Freddie Prinze was his always cheerful friend. Hard to believe Freddie Prinze's son ended up being more famous than his father. The only thing I can remember about her on the show was the time she said "pray to her" referring to God, and the grumpy old man didn't care for that at all.

What a career for Della Reese. Touched by an Angel was a family-friendly show with loads of star power including Roma Downey, Valerie Bertinelli and plenty more guest stars. Used to be one of the highest-ranking shows on television!
RIP, Della.

Among her other accomplishments, Della Reese was a great singer. She lived a good life ... and a long one. Rest in peace, Della.

Loved her. Even have a friend whose cat is named Della Reese. I know others posting here have Promised Land and Touched By An Angel in their memories, but she had one of the great voices of R & B. As for movies, I still get hysterical every time I see her in Harlem Nights. Yes, she was Gospel raised and everything she did was in good taste, but she played some wild roles along the way.

A loss to be sure.

I read somewhere that during the 2001-02 season, the PAX reruns frequently beat Live! with Regis and Kelly on WHIO and Ananda Lewis on WDTN in the Dayton, Ohio market... they aired at 9am on WBDT which aired shows from PAX TV.

One of the "Touched By An Angel" episodes used one of Della's songs as background in a scene (IIRC, it was "And That Reminds Me".....).
I told my daughters, who were watching the show, that the woman singing in the background was "Tess"......!!!
They didn't believe me!!! :)
Ms. Reese did have a GREAT voice....that will be sorely missed......
RIP.....

RIP, Della. She was a great singer and actress. Remember her performances in "Chico And The Man" and "Touched By An Angel" as well as her own talk show "Dalla", in which she was the first Black woman to host her own talk show, years before Oprah. The angels have now officially claimed her.

"And That Reminds Me" was one of the standards Mix 106 in Charlotte NC was still playing during its chimpanzee period. That was one of the better songs they were still playing.
