Diana Ross/Oakenfold/Madonna...no airplay, US radio biast against dance!!

I agree. The US seems to be the only major country in the world with such a microscopic fraction of its airwaves playing techno or at lest good 4/4 dance music of any kindor even dancy remixes of popular mainsteam songs. In Europe and Asia, techno is a foundation like rock & roll is here. You mention Paul Oakenfold - what about his remix of Rubberneckin' from Elvis Presley two years ago? It's incredible, especially when you compare the sound quality of the remix with the sound quality of the original. By all accounts, it's an upbeat, punchy, fun rework of an old song by a monster of American music, and I did not hear of a single radio station picking it up anywhere in the US. I tired to get the MD of our Star 102.5FM here in Buffalo to play it, but she wouldn't - and she liked it (personally). This spring, when a new PD came on, I tried to get him to play Ferry Corsten's "Fire", which features prominent vocal samples of Simon LeBon of Duran Duran - and we play Duran Duran on a daily basis, and still no! (although just like the previous MD with the other song, he liked it - personally).

It would be fun to find one of these brokered radio stations that may have some unsold time during drivetime, that would be willing to experiment. They could play dance for an hour, have traffic reports from someone like metro traffic which provides some commercials, adding a few other facts like Energy in Chicago did, where the traffic reporter would end with some info on the stock market or weather.
I would imagine if anything, this guy with some unkown station would get a lot of publicity around the country and probably draw enough listeners to get in the ratings, which the station problably never has ever had.
A few advertisers like some dance clubs might step up and offer some help like buying a little time and provide mixers to mix the music. If it created anything the station could end up brokering dance a couple of hours during the day and give some exposure to these artists, not to mention how irritating this could be to someone like Clear Channel who has always killed off dance formats on 103.1 in LA just to pick up a few listeners so KIIS can stay a top biller.
The guy maybe would end up making some money for someone like Clear Channel to pay for a few hours time just to get him to do something else. If this would work, think of all the brokered stations who would go out and do the same thing just to get paid not to play dance, just like farmers get paid not to grow some crops.

In Madonna's case, I'm just wondering if it's a backlash against some of her outrageous behavior. I have always liked Madonna's music, and her ability to reinvent her sound for each new album she comes out with. But lets face it, she is not well liked by many for her constant mocking of religion, and her outrageous stage shows. And I admit, I don't like supporting people that behave like that.

Having said that though, it is her music that ultimately makes her money, and she's excellent at keeping her music sound fresh. So I have enjoyed most of her music over the years, with the exception of her Erotica album. The question that should be asked however, is who is responsible for her lack of US airplay. Is it really a widespread public boycott of her, or is it the powers that be that run radio (cough, cough, Clear Channel anyone?!)?

If it is Clear Channel that is behind the lack of airplay, against public opinion, then that is just not right considering the oppressive junk that gets played on an hourly basis on Clear Channel stations everyday! I am proud to say I am conservative in my views, but I do have a problem with a so-called conservative company in Clear Channel that won't play Madonna for her rightfully offensive behavior, and then turn around and play f-word filled rap music about sex and ho's every five minutes!

Then again maybe people in this country just aren't into dance music as much as people in other countries are. Most likely though, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Without turning this into a Madonna post, Madonna holds the record for top billing concert performer world wide so it certainly isn't a public boycott that prevents her current album from US. airplay. Additionally anyone that saw her last concert would know it was anything but offensive.
Anyone who says otherwise doesn't understand the ploy.
The reason Madonna's latest album didn't get much airplay in the US. was because of it's genre, dance.
CC and all other media giants had no problem spinning Erotica when it came out which was considered controversial by those Americans afraid of discussing sex.
Dance music does not get fair airplay in this country for a number of reasons but certainly none of those have to do with politics, religion or sex.
After all we're not talking about country music, country music listeners (many of whom are conservative) and the Dixie Chicks!
