Dick Biondi to Celebrate 50 Years in Chicago Radio

Re: WHOA, Nellie, slow that thing down!

Tom Wells said:
Last song after Dick's 'Goodinight Sweetheart', going into the real oldies network was the Four Tops "It's The Same Old Song",
was also in play-it-quick speed, with pitch absolutely correct.
Two thirds of the way through, my wife 's and my ears cocked up like dogs ears do, when it gradually SLOWED DOWN to normal speed,
still maintaining perfect pitch throughout! No artifacting or any other side effect except the time span. Very freaky if you
happened to be listening closely.

They speeded up several songs in the last half hour. Reminded me of WOKY in the late '60s....only even faster! And I also noticed the Four Tops starting out fast and then returning to normal speed. What the heck was that? But the processing was fabulous, and indeed it was great to spend an evening hearing WLS sounding like WLS.

But then after the Tops came the ad for colon blow or whatever and the talk show programming. Reminded me of the sign over the door as you were leaving Ed Debevic's restaurant: "You are now leaving Ed Debevic's....and returning to grim reality"

The WLS-AM signal sounded fabulous, especially in stereo. The audio was dense, loud, and clean. Comparing stereo to mono, the stereo signal had MUCH more punch. It just jumped out of the speakers! I sure hope I wasn't the only one listening and appreciating this very special broadcast. I am guessing that this will take the place of the "WLS Rewind" broadcast for this year.

Also, I can confirm that WLS is broadcasting in stereo during the daytime as well as at night. So those of you within a couple of hundred miles of Chicago, give 'em a listen if you've got a stereo receiver!

I captured some of the program on cassette; not super high quality but probably adequate for AM radio. I suppose I could post some snips online if anyone is interested. Suggestions on how to do that would be appreciated. I guess some people use You-Tube for air checks; are there audio-only alternatives? What about copyright issues?

HOLY COW! Even a day after the event I am still amazed about Citadel simulcasting The Big 89 WLS and FM 95. When was the last time that happened? The mid 80's? I listened back then here in Florida (when you could hear them) and vividly remember the "25 Years of Rock n' Roll" jingle package. Anyone have that? Anyway, a FANTASTIC treat since more than likely there'll be no chance of a 'Rewind'.

Sorry I saw this so late, I don't know where you can find that aircheck, however if you were
a fan of the BIG 89, Chicago media personality Scott Childers, who now works at a Suburban
Chicago Next Media station, put together an excellent website of WLS history. You can find it
at the following link, if you have never been to his site, I believe you will enjoy it!
