When I was there I listened to WKSF 99.9 Kiss FM asheville alot, and at night we had two other chrs that boomed in, WLS Chicago, and the AM simulcast to WDJX Louisville on AM 1080, did anyone else used to listen to these stations back in the day as an alternative to I-100 at times?

If you were in Ashville NC in the Early Eighties you could have pick up the old WGAR 1220 out of Cleveland OH at night, if WSKY did not interfere. They were as good as or better than WLS. The main problem with reception is the hundreds local 1230 and 1240 stations staying on at night creating a Million watt RF noise channel at night. . I worked the 1250 WBMR Marion NC which was a daytimer at the time with 500 watt PSA @ 6am so the reception of 1220 at night was possible. During the late 1960’s and 1970’ and early 1980’s Ohio had some of the best Top 40 radio stations and on air talent in the world. Alan Freed (I think I misspelled his last name but someone will correct me) worked Cleveland when he got credit for starting Rock and Roll on the radio. That is part of the reason the R & R Hall of Fame is in Cleveland.

I use to listen to KISS FM (99.9) when I was in college at UT mainly because I found them far SUPERIOUR to anything on the air in Knoxville at the time. I never CARED from WOKI at the time because the were known as Hits 100 and only playing what was current on the charts at the time. It seemed that every thing they played at the time was played every hour or so. If yopu missed a song this hour, just wait an hour and you would hear it again. They didn't even play songs that were hits a month ago, only songs that were in the TOP 40 that week. And WIMZ was even worse. They wewre still refering to themselves as "Knoxville Rock Station" but they were playing Madonna, Phil Collins and Kool and the Gang every hour, definitely not ROCK!!!

In the mid-80's, this was the only "rock" there was, outside of heavy metal.

Hi:
WBRM Marion AM 1250 went on at night in the late 80s which was a big deal at the time since that meant they could broadcast local basketball and football games live, even thought the signal didn't carry too far outside the city limits. Back in the day, I actually can remember listening to DJX on the am side as well as WLS late night and early AM. In the county, you couldn't get I-100 or WIMZ but you could and still can within the city limits of Marion, both of those signals come straight through the gaps in the mountains and sound local in parts of town. At that location, I could get fairly regularly WJMX out of South Carolina and WZNS out of Dillon as well.

WKSF, WANS, and WCKN were all great stations with their own personalities. And, I, as the listener benefited from that competition much like I benefited from the WBCY, WROQ, Z100 competition going on in Charlotte at the same time. But of those listed, WKSF is the one I miss listening to the most. Chuck, Dawn, GT, John Stevens, Pat Garrett, Bill McClement with the news.... :)

Nope, I listed Pat but I did forget Brother Bill, and wasn't Boo Baron at Kiss for a short period of time or is my memory wrong on that one? I know he was at WROQ in CLT doing mornings but for some reason, I think he was at Kiss for a time too.

not sure about Boo Baron but I do remember Ric Hampton, GT, Dawn, John Stevens, Pat Garrett, Chuck Finley but I cant remeber Sid the Surf. Did hear him when 96.5 WOXL first started up as Oldies 96.5 a few years ago. And of course Brother Bill. Cant remember any more, getting old. Cant forget that reverb. Would love to hear it again.

I don't think Boo was on WKSF, he did spend some time in Knoxville though. Boo was my live overnight guy in Athens, GA (on a soft AC, btw) a number of years ago. He was a scream to work with.

I do remember getting WDJX on AM from time to time. They were very polished and noticeably different from anything we had local. WOKI had a different sound in almost every year of its existence as a CHR, but always had a hard time trying to get a major market sound together. Another station that would blow in, when the conditions were just right was 93.3 out of Forest City, NC/Greenville, SC. In the early 90's 93.3 WBBO was a very tight flamethrowin' CHR. Again, a conditioned I-100 listener would hear a station like WBBO and react to it like it was a signal coming in from outer space.
