DID YOU SEE WJVC 96.1 "My Country's" June PPL's

That 1.7 is not the least bit shabby for a station that is only 6 months old on a frequency that only reaches one of the counties in the market in which is competing against big guns like WBAB, WALK, KJoy and B103. The owner of this new broadcasting company had the temerity to take a risk on a format that the conventional wisdom in this market claimed was a non starter. He also has put in place programming and marketing that is skewing YOUNG, while not rejecting the old timers ( read me- I'm an old timer and I like what he's doing, the Freedom Fest Concert they put on had a little of everything). The Station is everywhere and is involving members of the commmunity. In fact all of JVC Broadcasting's 4 stations are skewing young...Party 105, La Fiesta, My Country 96.1, only WRCN skews slightly older (Classic Rock). Which the conventional wisdom tells us "Young listeners is what advertisers want" well this company is going for them. They've already got more concerts planned, and the people who work there are enjoying what they do. Not only is Carraciolo smart, he's willing to take risks. I'm glad. I am really enjoying the station. And if you want to see the young people who are into this music head down to the Nutty Irishman of Bayshore one Wednesday (the women are hot! and not cause it's 98 degrees outside).

WJVC had a 1.7 rating (6+) back in April.
In June it increased to 2.7.
I have a post below this one, giving my opinion that this country station's ratings could be awesome if a way would be found to put a good signal into Nassau County.

The station seems to have very high TSL, not a ton of listeners, but those that do listen are very loyal, listen for a long time and ratings spike as a result.

From what I recall, geographically and at one time culturally, the William Floyd Parkway is considered the east-west dividing line of Long Island. The COL Center Moriches plus the tower are east of 'Bill Floyd'.

A 2.7 for the book is a monster figure for a station that far east. Has any station closer to Montauk Point than to Belmont Race Track ever had a higher Nassau-Suffolk book?

WJVC even showed up in the New YORK book!

Did Arbitron inadvertently issue a PPM to a family of radioactive ducks near Brookhaven? If not, yee-hah and nice going!

Even though WJVC is only 6 months old, they have already announced their second concert. It will take place in September at the Brookhaven Amphitheater. Featured are country stars Eric Church, Thomson Square, and the Jane Deer Girls.
I don't think that LI's previous country station WMJC, had any concerts.

Barry, WMJC had a number of concert's in its country heyday (pardon the expression). Several that I went to were at Eisenhower Park, but I think they also did a few at Bald Hill.

However, the concerts being staged by WJVC are nothing short of amazing when you look at the number of acts they are presenting and where those acts are on the charts.

It is noteworthy that the station is promoting like crazy. As has been pointed out to get the kind of ratings they are getting with a signal that basically gets to ONE county in the market is phenomenal.

On the other hand let us not forget that this isn't Podunk. It ranks withing the top twenty major markets in the country. It is not a secondary market. These artists want the exposure on Long Island - the sheer numbers that even a small percentage of the market represent is a staggering number to new artists. And if they get close to the fans now they will have those fans....probably for a long time.

WJVC is doing a great job and I hope the momentum carries them to be around forever. If you look at the success of 92.5 in the Hartford Market, you will know that there is no reason this can not happen on Long Island.

Reply to Steve Green. The William Floyd may be at the Geographic Center of LI, but Route 110, considerably West is the population "center line." WJVC reaches just about all of Suffolk. There's a lot of people in Suffolk alone.

Yeah, Vic. Decades ago, the population center would have been the Nassau-Suffolk line. Before that, it would have been something like 106, or the Wantagh Parkway.

I was referencing it because of the distance involved. WRCN and WPTY have the same general tower site and coverage as WJVC, as well as WLIR, yet I don't believe any of them ever came close to a 2.7 in the two-county book. In effect, I'd been wondering what the previous high-water mark was for what's virtually an 'East End' station.

And it'd be real interesting if WJVC went up from THAT figure! If it does, the parallel possibility of them cracking a 1.0 in the New York book would be incredible.

I've said it before, but feel it bears repeating.
JVC broadcasting should try to buy WIGX 94.3 from Barnstable. Its ratings are far lower than WJVC's.
Then simulcast WJVC on 94.3. That would extend coverage to most of western LI, and beyond, even though its signal is not real strong. I believe the rise in ratings that should result would be well worth the expense.

They could buy 92.7 back for much less than they sold it for.

My understanding is 94.3 is NOT for sale, period. I am sure JVC would love nothing more. JVC Broadcasting was not the entity that sold 92.7, it was the company that the owner of JVC used to work for, The Morey Organization that owner LIR and sold it for astronomic sums. I'd love to see JVC buy it, but dont be so sure it'd wind up a country station...JVC has party 105 and La Fiesta....why wouldn't they keep it a Spanish station if the station is doing well (I have no idea if La Fiesta is doing well or not...but all of those stations given their limited reach seem to be doing well given the fact that JVC is well run with a great management team, and a big sales force.

Vic, are they making any money? ??? because all the glitz, shoeshine and glamour are great....nice logos and t shirts for everyone, but if the station doesnt make any money, its like great breasts on a bull! ;D

As I don't work for JVC, I do not know how much revenue WJVC pulls in. But they do carry plenty of advertising. And a good part of it is for lifestyle related businesses, such as nightspots offering live country music, and a store that sells gear for horseback riding.
That should be a good indication that the country format is viable in Long Island.

My statement or question wasnt if the format was viable or needed on the island, personally I think the station needs a few tweeks, but thats my opinion, I just wondered if they were seeing a return on their outlay. You can trade for neat signs, t shirts and the local clubs will always want to have signage up, it makes it look great, since I dont catch many of the stop sets on the station, I have no idea if those said clubs are running ads. Lets see how the next few books come and go, I wish them well!

I too am an "old-timer" (well, not THAT old, 60) and a former Long Islander. After graduating Plainedge High School in 69, I enjoyed a radio career out west, where I fell in love with country. I am thrilled to hear about all the excitement being generated by this new LI country station.

Another post on this station mentioned it's leap into mixing in some older country, which is astonishing. Turn to the Texas page and read the AMARILLO thread; you'll find discussion by several, including myself, on programmers unwilling to risk playing the older country classics, even in The Lone Star State!
