Discovery CEO says COVID-19 reinforces need for no-sports TV bundle

https://www.fiercevideo.com/video/d...id-19-reinforces-need-for-no-sports-tv-bundle

Discovery CEO David Zaslav said that with live sports on hold during the COVID-19 crisis, pressure is mounting for TV providers to offer a bundle of content without sports.

During today’s earnings call, he said a bundle with no sports and a smaller price would likely help turnaround the persistent video subscriber losses for cable, telecom and satellite providers. He said services like Philo, which sells a linear streaming service focused on entertainment channels, are seeing “big uptake” from consumers who don’t want to pay for sports.

“I’m hoping you follow the behavior, you follow the need in the marketplace and you follow what’s equitable and fair. Ultimately, it might put pressure on these big sports players that are bundling and forcing and leveraging and jamming, to say, even in this moment, ‘Alright. Enough. I’ll give you more flexibility to give America what they want,’” Zaslav said.

Here is a statement on Discovery's response over the COVID-19 issues in broadcasting and the sports bundle.

Some of their reality shows are attracting huge audiences. Oak Island is a hit. Forged By Fire has inspired its own knife set. Free shipping.

What I said.

People get all nostalgic about the days when Discovery showed eclectic documentaries and The History Channel showed sober historical films, but the reality programming attracts eyeballs and advertisers. Mencken was right.

History (Not a Discovery owned channel, but since it was brought up...) does still show history specials at times. But I'll admit I like American Pickers, Pawn Stars, and American Restoration. But I don't care anything about Ancient Aliens or any of the conspiracy or end of the world type shows.

Food Network is one of the few channels my wife and I agree on. She likes the cooking and competition shows and I like Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and other restaurant shows. And we both like some of the home improvement shows on HGTV.

If that makes us the lowest common denominator then so be it.

He's right about there being a need for no sports. Sports probably should be on a higher tier anyway. Orby is fairly new which is why there isn't a lot of knowledge about them. The $40 is all in, inclusive of taxes and fees. That is a pretty bare package, but it may work for some.

My only real time for wanting live sports is during football season, and a lot of time if there was a way to see individual games I want to see I would do that. I could definitely go for a non-sports package most of the rest of the year.

Depends on the package, but I pay an extra $10/month for something called a "sports entertainment package." It gives me access to all of the league channels as well as the local sports teams. BTW there has been no discount during the time when there has been no live sports.
