DJs/radio people with non radio related side gigs

I used to work with a mid-day guy who had a fairly lucrative side gig, ghost-writing erotic novels.

I've known at least a couple of air talents who had Realtor licenses (one was the PD).

The late John Van Pelt, who was the morning guy at G105 and 94Z in Raleigh/Durham in the 1980s, was perhaps better known as a talented storm spotter and severe weather expert after he moved on from radio.

For a few years I bought land for back taxes and resold it. Later I issued 'coin art' or fantasy coins and got up to about $30,000 a year gross. My first was publishing a newsletter. I always looked for something that I could do not matter where radio took me.

When I was in the game, I worked at the bosses Radio Shack. It wasn't great pay but, it did barely get me through, somehow. The station was a model of a 1980's Radio Shack giving birth to a radio station in the 90's. Don't get me wrong but, the owners loved the station and all work was very professional looking, to be cheap as it was. We used that old WFAA AM board until it died. 😂

And yes @b-turner it was the same station we both worked for, Billy Pirtle would have been proud, of us somehow. You know Reel to Reel scuzzy's to this day still work.If you went to the transmitter site on 205, I hope you wore lead on your nether region. 🤪

I truly loved working at both the Radio Shack and the station. It brings back a ton of memories, now my memory stinks. I am thankful for every day I have had inside the stations I worked for.

Yes, I didn't want to "out" her so I kept the names and etc. out of it, but you hit the nail right on the head!
She doesn't keep it a secret. She has it mentioned on her Audacy bio, and Facebook page. Thinking back to elementary school, how cool it would have been to have a teacher who also worked as a radio DJ.!

I was a police officer in two markets. In one, no problem. In the other, a department store chain used to use us in plain clothes to catch shoplifters. One weekend, I was hanging out in an upstairs viewing room when I saw my jerk of a GM come in. It was unusual for him to be there because he lived in another county. I watched him as he was walking around looking for me. Several months prior to that and before he knew I was working for the city, he asked me if I knew if another jock was working part time somewhere, not in radio. I did not know. Anyway, after I saw this guy trying to spy on me, at the end of my shift I wrote a "nice" letter telling him how much of a jerk he was and I didn't need him spying on me. I walked out of there and never went back. About six months later, the owners showed up and told him the place was sold and he was out.
