do u think 2 hiphop stations survive in the big market city?

I would think it would depend on the demographics of the market.

Two should be able to do very well in a Detroit, Memphis, Atlanta or New Orleans.

Probably not in a Seattle, Boston, Minneapolis, or Phoenix.
 
Norfolk VA has 2: 103 Jamz (used to be the leader) and Z104 (CHR/RHY, and leader now)

Richmond, VA has 2: Power 921, 1065 the Beat (about even in ratings, they go up and down)

Washington DC has 2 also...93.9 Kiss-FM and WPGC 95.5.

Baltimore has 3, WERQ 92.3 (#1 in market) on top of good signals from the two from DC.

But to answer the question, yes 2 Hip Hop Stations can survive in big markets, but not all.
 
Most markets have 2 Urban Hip-Hop stations targeting African Americans. Markets like Atlanta, DC, Chicago and Philly have that 3rd station playing Top 40 Hip-Hop music targeting the white suburban teens "Hits and Hip-Hop"
 
New York ( Power 105.1 and Hot 97 ).
Miami ( Power 99, WMIB 103.5, WPOW 96.5 )
Orlando FL ( 102 Jamz,Power 95.3 )
 
LA has two: Power 106 (CHR/Rhy) and Latino 96 (Spanglish CHR/Rhy). And, since our mainstream CHR, KIIS, leans very rhythmic, it could be considered at least half a Hip-Hop station....
 
Dallas/Fort Worth has 2 Hip-Hop stations that are both in the Top 10 ratings.

K104 (KKDA-FM) Usually #1 in the market until recently. Now average somewhere in the Top 5

97.9 The Beat (KBFB-FM) Flagship home of the Rickey Smiley Morning Show. Usually in the top 10. A few times, they have peaked at #2 in ratings.
 
I wouldn't consider a top 40 or rhythmic station a real hip hop station. Hot 107.9 in Atlanta, now THAT'S a hip hop station. Maybe even V-103 could pass, even though they lean a lot to real r&b. 95.5 The Beat and anything similar on the other hand, NOT hip hop. The few real hip hop stations that exist exclude certain songs from Akon, Flo Rida, Pitbull, Rihanna, and don't play anything from Britney, Lady GaGa, or Katy Perry.

There was a time when I used to love real hip hop stations, but now I prefer rhythmic or top 40 or something else.
 
Well i live in fort walton Bch florida which is market number 226 lol i believe. Yeah real big time. Anyways we have to hip hop stations, Fly921 leans more rhythmic and 93blx definitely leans urban with waay tooo many darn commercials but that's another story. And they are usually tied in the ratings.
 
I think certain markets can definately handle 2 or more urban and or rhythmic Hip Hop Hits stations... In Detroit they have 98 JLB Hot 102.7 and even the CHR in Disguise Channel 95.5 is really a hip hop station for white boys. At one time Detroit had I think 5 Urban stations.

Miami has 99.1 WEDR, 103.5 WMIB, and for rhythmic Hip Hop for latinos, whites and some blacks, you got Power 96

I think new Orleans could support 2 or 3 Urbans, and-or one Rhtyhmic hits and Hip Hop station.

Saint Louis could definately survive with a 3rd hip hop station... they have 100.3 KATZ which has the big signal,,, but radio ones Hot 104.1 doesnt have the best signal, so I think Saint Louis could definately support a 3rd urban or Rhythmic Hits and Hip Hop type station. Atlanta has two urbans, and one Rhythmic that pretends to be an Urban but is too conservative and too weak of a signal,, and both their Mainstrream CHRs in A-town are too Hot AC conservative.. I think 95.5 The Beat should be a youth friendly Hot sounding Mainstream CHR,, keep the Hip Hop Lean, but play some POP, Dance, and Rock too,,,, It isnt aggressive enough to be a real Hip Hop station, and its too Urban to really be a Rhythmic hits or CHR...

Here in Indianapolis we definately need a second Urban station, and possibly a 3rd Hits and Hip Hop Rhythmic station,,,, Radio Ones Hot 96 plays too many Ballads during the day, and they air Russ Par in mornings, I want a local Urban Morning Show that knows Indy and is funny, but not over the top stupid like some morning jocks. We have so many underperforming and duplicate formats in Indy, I dont know why no one has tried to go urban yet, or even a Rhythmic hits and Hip Hop format with both black and white jocks..... I will admit that R-O Hot 96 does have some killer Mixshows and some DJs with some good Skills,,, and it would be hard to top that in this market. Mixshows are very important on any kind of Urban Format,,, but not so much on,,,lets say a CHR......
 
Most Rhythmic stations aren't really Hip-Hop stations like some may think. When did Brittany Spears, Lady GaGa and etc become Hip-Hop artist? A REAL Hip-Hop station plays NO Pop music. The real Hip-Hop stations are HOT 97 NY, HOT 107.9 ATL and HOT 107.1 Memphis. I hate to hear these Rhythmic stations say "#1 for Hip-Hop." The new "Hits & Hip-Hop" positioner is way better for Rhythmic stations.
 
Yeah I Agree Shawty,, the hits and Hip Hop,,, or ENTER CITYs NAME Party station is better for rhythmic stations,,,, but I dont really think a rhythmic should be labled as number one for hit Music or whatever, unless there is no other real CHR in town, and the station plays at least some Dance,POP,Rock crossover, like B-96 in Chicago which at times sounds more CHR than their Kiss FM CHR there, and also more agressive on Hip hop than their Urban WGCI which plays alot of Ballads and edits and wont play anything that isnt squeaky clean.... Power 92 is really more of a gary indiana station, but is probably Chicagos real hip hop station. Another good real hip hop station is 102 Jamz in,,, I think Greensboro North Carolina.
 
Im no radio expert, but I've heard different stories about the whole reporting panel thing. I've heard Urban stations sometimes report or label themselves as Rhythmic for billing purposes. Trust me, HOT 107.1/KXHT in Memphis is no where near Rhythmic.
 
It's hilarious when I hear Orlando's Power 95.3 Id itself as Orlando's # 1 for Hip Hop and the song they play after is "Womanizer".

They're not the only ones. KSFM/Sacramento, which bills themselves "Your #1 Station for Hip-Hop and R&B", has Britney ("Womanizer" & "Circus"), Katy ("Hot & Cold"), GaGa ("Just Dance" and "Poker Face") and PCD ("I Hate This Part") occupying their playlist, along with Dance-flavored hits from Kid Cudi and Madcon. And it seems to have worked in its favor since they rank among the top 5 stations in the Fall '08 Sacramento Arbitrons.

Hot 97 New York, Hot 93.7 Hartford CT, 102 Jamz Greensbore N.C. , KMEL San Francisco, and WPGC Washington D.C. ( Urban stations reporting as Rhythmic stations )
 
The line is starting to blur on Urban and RHY (especially when Urban's bill themselves as RHY and vice versa)....but in some cases the RHY's are taking over. In Norfolk...WNVZ (Z104, CHR/RHY) was clearly being beat by WOWI (103 Jamz, Urban). But now the tables have turned and 103 continues to fall behind Z104, and there is no other Urban station in town.

If it won't for a few songs the two fomats are very similar.

BTW- Z104 stataes "the 757 Party Station"

Some of those have to be miss prints... Hot 97 wouldnt play Eye of the Tigger, or bruce springstein..lol
