Do you all think 103.1 WRKA made the right decision flipping to new country?

Now that some time has passed do you all think 103.1 made the right decision and flipped from oldies to new country? As i had heard it research shows one out of fifty people listen to oldies in this area whereas one out of two people listen to some form of country. So i don't know oldies seemed to do pretty well and i don't see many commercials promoting new country anymore. Seems like a huge gamble that if i were a suit may not have taken.

I will say i like the country legend station. Something different to listen to in this town.It really is a shame radio one did not do classic country well at 104.3 it could have been a success.Just one of many mistakes radio one made!!!

Good luck to cox radio in there country adventures

I think you answered your own question.

"research shows one out of fifty people listen to oldies in this area whereas one out of two people listen to some form of country"

You go from reaching 2% of the listeners to 50%. I like it because there is finally a choice to go to if one of them starts getting stupid with the play list. Competition makes everyone better.

Classic country is the music that was charting when I was coming up. And yes, it's sad that Radio One half assed the format when they had it on 104 because the listeners were there.

For WAKY's sake, YES! I also like the Country Legends on 103.9. It is nice to hear true country music again in Louisville and not the Pop that poses as Country music.

Cox has two intentions here.

FIRST Cashflow - They realize that ratings are all so important, however this now disfranchises the country audience and if your business wants to connect with that audience, you have to spread your money across three stations instead of two (which 2 of those 3 are now owned by Cox). From a money standpoint, this was a great move.

Remember, the bulk of the country income was still flying all over Radio Drive. Now, with the splinter in the market, its going to be still heavy on CC but more of that will slide down to Fourth Ave.

SECOND Ratings - Once again, they are creating a splinter. WAMZ will still be the cow in the heard of chickens, and thats what everyone expects. However, if they can cut a leg off the cow, they are gonna try. What this allows if for Cox to push their cashpig WVEZ closer to the top. More money for WVEZ and more coming in because of the new splinter with country.

WHAS will benefit the most of all stations. WGZB/WVEZ will get secondary benefits from this.

So when can we expect air talent???

I've been down this road. Just playing Kenny Chesney and Sugarland along with fancy strategy will not topple the mountain that is WAMZ. It's all about tactic and it must be more than music sweeps.

Once again, I did not say it would topple the giant, but doing this will cause them to cut a leg off, thats the most important tactic they did! WAMZ wont be #2 forever. With this, you may see them eventually slide to #3 or possibly #4, but at least it pulled them down that far!

For AMZ to drop to #3 would mean a 3 share drop to a 6.2. Assuming 103.1 got half of that lost audience, they would be a 4.5.

I'm concerned that might cause some trouble on Radio Drive.

Rome wasnt built in a day and WAMZ wont fall in a day either. Things take time, dedication and patience. Yes, they plan on hiring 3 people on Q103 (2 in morning drive and 1 in afternoon drive).

I respect your opinion, but what is taking them so long to put jocks on the air??

My question exactly. As former engineer of the Versailles,IN station on 103.1 that went dark to facilitate this move, I can speak with total confidence that they knew this was coming many months in advance. It's a mystery as to why they weren't ready to hit the ground running. And no matter how many times the question is asked, no one seems to have an answer.

Only 2 live dayparts? So much for out-doing WAMZ...sounds like they'll be content to equal them in 2 dayparts & let the jukebox roll the other 18 hours. To mis-quoted Montgomery Gentry, I Feel A Three Share Comin' On....

Not planning is planning to fail and Q103 seems like they did not plan this whole thing well at all wtf???They had months to prepare!!!

Q103 has no need for live talent -- they station brands itself as not talking and playing "4-songs in a row with no talking inbetween"...

I said it earlier, if they added talent what on earth would they do -- mention the call letters every 4-songs-- that what station imaging is for.. if the station added talent, it would totally have to rebrand.. and right now "4 songs in a row with no talking between the songs" is Q103 -- that and 50 minutes of music every hour... GAG

Geek get a clue. They didn't make all the signal upgrades and commercial buying to be a jukebox.

OK, then explain the current state of the station now ....

In the past 4-years, it's been proven a station can be successful running jockless, I agree with kentuckymedia on q103, it will knock wamz out of the top 3 spot, but, never overtake them, if they can accomplish this and bump WVEZ up a few shares, then they've accomplished their job...

The station has been on for several months now on 103.1... it's the same exact station that was on 103.9, except that little "q" is there... the clock is ticking if cox wants to add talent, the station is branded as a jockless format, adding talent now would mean the station would totally change the way it sounds...

Why hire a talent to do something imaging can already do?

If only we had a little box where we could but our music to play without the interruption of the human voice. We could walk around without a clue of whats going on in the nasty scary real world!
