Do you want to hear guests on Sports Radio

R

I am a huge Sports Radio listener and have noticed that between 950 and 610 there is a big difference between the amount of guestst that they have on. Like Friday, Jody Mac had David Montgomery the CEO of the Phillies, Mike Shcmidt, and John Kruk. I don't think 610 does that many guests. I would rather hear big name guests, what about everyone else?

610 thrives on the calls it gets from listeners, as its lines are always jammed with sports opinions from the Philly fan. Same with WFAN in New York, which, oh by the way, is one of the highest-billing stations in the world. WIP is likely following the same model. Plus they're way ahead of WPEN in the ratings department, so if it ain't broke, why fix it?

I see your point. My thing is, I get sick of hearing the same callers call in nonstop. You have to vary it up a little bit.

I agree with the point about WIP not needing to change, dramatically, what's not broken. From a personal standpoint as a listener, it depends on the guest and why they're on the show. If they're contributing something insightful, great. If they're really just there to hawk a book, TV show, whatever, then I have zero willingness to listen to it and tune right out.

I think it's all relative. Is the guest going to be compelling?

Hockey players? No.
Baseball players? Rarely.
Basketball players? Somewhat if they would actually say what's really going on socially behind the scenes.
Football? Same thing...add in steroids.

After that, you get the usual retired players that have moved into broadcasting and say the same things all the time.

Interviews on sports radio would be compelling if the jock actually did some journalistic investigation first. Eskin is the best at taking on compelling, hot topics with interesting guests and asking the hard questions. That's why he is the king.

Other than that, my favorite radio program in Philly is anything with Ray Didinger, bar none. The host and callers treat it like an interview and Didinger provides honest, objective, in depth insight on any subject related to Philly sports.

I don't care what anyone says, Sports Radio 950 kicked WIP's ass on postgame Phillies coverage. I heard Ryan Howard, Victorino, and Coste on with them and didn't hear anyone on with IP. That's when guests are cool to hear.

Aaron Rowland was on WIP. Tomorrow morning I guarantee you will hear a bunch of phillies and their brass on the air. WIP has a ton of guests on the air. Dave Montgomery comes on several times a year. They just dont have them all in one shot like 950. Take a look at the ratings book. Look at the Eagles pre game tent. Who brings the crowd and who doesnt.

Here is where WIP looks terrible - they collectively (hosts) bashed the Phillies and Charlie Manuel all season long now only to ride their jocks. The listener does not forget.

I loved seeing Eskin standing on the field watching the celebration. Now, you want compelling content? Let all the players come on his show for pre-post season hype and allow them to take open shots at him...including the manager. That would be some interesting radio, and the thing about Eskin is he would do it.

Guests have never been listed in an Arbitron diary.
Fans don't get in their car and say, "I wonder what guests are going to be on today".
Sports radio is dominated by interesting hosts who drive conversation and create their own content.
Guests are awesome if they aid in the discussion of what the hosts are into.
WPEN is not in the same class as WIP. They need to do anything that they can to just show up in the ratings.
Post game Phillies coverage? How did you even pick up WPEN? Were you in their parking lot? I know I tried last week and had no ability to get it at night.
As for the WIP hosts, they are paid to give opinions. The fact is that this team started out terribly and deserved to be bashed. They got close many times and kept faltering.
Yes they got hot at the end of the year, to finish with one more win than their best previous mark under Manual.
If the Mets had not had the worst collapse in the history of the sport, Manuel would still be getting bashed.

Is WIP supposed to wave pom-poms? No they are their to give opinion. The Phils played well but they also go lucky that the Mets collapsed. I was at the game and WPEN was on the side of the road with a guy on a megaphone begging for people to listen to the station. Thats sad.

Wow. Mike Phillips' live and on-location postgame show on WNJC must have fared better by comparison.

Regardless of the WIP defense / justification, they are collectively tied to their bashing, and da Iggles are in the toilet.

It's radio karma.
