Does Anybody Have Airchecks of Classical Music at KKHI?

I never got to hear KKHI when I was Little all I know is that 95.7FM became KPIX FM under group W before CBS had to Sell 95.7 to Bonneville. and KKHI was supposed to be the competitor of KDFC.

I wish I had an aircheck of Scott Beach (former local voice of Macy's and actor) doing his show. Correct me if I am wrong didn't Bob March (capt. Satellite) have a show also on KKHI?

Sorry I was only 8 years old when KKHI died in San Francisco. However the KKHI Call Letters moved to Denver in 2009 at 101.9. I did not really listen to Classical music until 1996 when KDFC was at 102.1fm but I was an on and off fan of KDFC for over 15 years until it moved to 90.3 just 2 weeks ago. I wish I didn't destroy my KDFC collection from 1996.

I would like to hear an Aircheck of KPIX myself

I'm not sure what 95.7 KPIX was supposed to be like, but it was a mess. What was so odd about that was that Westinghouse was the co-pioneer (along with CBS) of the All News radio format, and had major stations in Los Angeles (KFWB), and 1010/WINS in New York. You would think that they would have known what they were doing. I believe Group W originated the slogan "Give us 22 minutes, and we'll give you the world."

KPIX was first branded as "The FM News Station." But it was amateurish, sloppy, and appeared to be very low budget. The few field reporters they employed couldn't write copy or speak well - they sounded like Interns to me. I remember that the station had one professional sounding anchor - an English (I think) guy with a Michael Jackson style delivery...obviously I mean Jackson the LA Talk host, not the dead singer. After awhile, KPIX seemed to give up on real news, and ran mostly traffic reports.

During the OJ Simpson trial, they ran live gavel-to-gavel coverage, so that sucked up months of air time. After OJ, they rebranded as the "FM Talk Station" and ran Don Imus (mornings), and Tom Leykis (afternoons). In mid-days, they ran Dr. Nancy Snyderman (local, at the time, I think) and Pat Thurston (definitely local). Thurston's show was excellent. She fills in at KGO these days.

If the talk version of the station had been given time to grow, it might have grown into a good alternative to KGO.

Wasn't KDFC Program Director Bill Lueth on KPIX FM? Maybe KKHI too

Lueth was PD at KDFC (still is, I think), and also KOIT, at one time, I'm pretty sure - during the Bonneville days. He may have been PD at 95.7 after the staton was purchased by Bonneville - the first incarnation was Top 40 Z-95.7 (KZQZ). Lueth is a shrewed guy, so I doubt he had anything to do with that KPIX mess. As far as I know, he was a Bonneville employee, and never worked for Westinghouse.

I remember 95.7 KPIX the Express. What an irritating piece of garbage that was. Every 30 seconds the announcers had to say, "95.7 the Express". So annoying. They had brought in Brian Cooley, now at CNET, as consultant. Group W gave him the reigns to the entire station. He had convinced the suits that this is what the Bay Area listeners wanted in an FM News/Talk format. A complete and total flop.

Before the O.J. trial, I thought they were going to flip and go after KOIT as, PIX 96. But that didn't happen.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Yes he was, in the beginning. He was a newsman for the briefest of times. I might be wrong but I think Bill started working at KDFC when it was owned by Brown Broadcasting.

Check out this section if KKHI history theres one location where the KDFC owner complained that KKHI's Transmitter was under KDFC property.

True enough for the FM (95.7).

Ed Davis owned the real estate at the top of Mt. Beacon. He bought the property specifically for KDFC just after WWII, locating the studios and FM transmitter up there. The surrounding area became federal land, first military and later parkland, so if you wanted to transmit from Mt. Beacon you had to lease space from Ed.

That arrangement continues today. Clear Channel, CBS, Entercom, EMF, several cellular and numerous land mobile companies still make regular payments to Ed's heirs.

Who were the DJ's At KKHI?

Off the top of my head, the names Keith Lockhart and Doug Pledger come to mind.

Bill Agee, too. I don't think Doug Pledger ever actually announced at KKHI. I think they played his syndicated shows, such as "Pledger at the Opera". During those years Pledger did mornings on KNBR and then later bought and ran KOFY.
