Does anyone know the precise listening audience of the Michael Savage radio show?

My comment wasn't about politics. I'm pointing out that where many posts here see a thoughtful broadcaster I see a self-fellating senile old man aimlessly rambling on the radio for three nearly incoherent hours.

Well I personally see similar results when I hear "Randi Rhodes". Its all a matter of opinion.

Exactly. Even if a listener tends to agree with the liberal perspective, I think that they can respect The Michael Savage Nation for being informative and thought provoking rather than following an agenda.

The man who wrote a book titled "Liberalism Is A Mental Disorder"? What is there for a liberal to respect about that bit of dehumanization right out of the Goebbels playbook? (And yes, I realize Mr. Savage is Jewish, and I know about Godwin's Law as well. Still, branding people who differ with you on social issues as somehow defective hardly elevates public discourse.)

Savage, just like the late Bob Grant, knows how to get attention. You have to accept that the theatrics are what gets ratings, just as you have to listen around the advertising realizing that it makes free distribution of the show possible.

babbled-on along those familiar lines that the right wing has used for the last 6 years.

If something has been true for six years, how is repeating the truth "babbling on"? Please note, I did not include the specific statement you referred to, because this isn't about that. The left wing has been repeating what it believes to be the truth for just as long. There's an interesting quality about the truth. It is true. And, it remains true over time. The only people who change what they "babble" frequently are the ones who aren't saying what they believe to be the truth.

Frankly, one doesn't counter another's opinion by denigrating it, as you just did. You counter errors by presenting accurate information in its place. Any idiot can characterize something they disagree with, even the truth, by simply calling it "garbage". There's a technical term for such bogus rejoinder -- it's "garbage".

It's impossible to avoid that here. Most of these people can't separate the radio part from the political part.

From my reading of this thread, much of the commentary (not all, admittedly) is about Dr. Weiner's style - not agreement or disagreement with his politics. That said, in any political talk show, it's almost impossible to separate the personality from his content. Human nature being what it is, people like people who agree with them and dislike people who don't.

Besides this whole whaaaa! liberals are so mean and don't respect our opinions schtick is getting really old.

It's as old and lame as, "Those conservatives keep on repeating the things that they think are true instead of changing their minds every time the wind shifts".

More like the things somebody told them are true (i.e., Dr. Weiner, Rush, some megachurch preacher), since few of them think for themselves.

Who is that your think/heard changes their minds every time the wind shifts? True believers in the PC camp are just as dogmatic as tea baggers, gun nuts and Jesus jumpers.

I wasn't referring to this thread, but since you brought up Savage's style....I hate it. At least his old show. I didn't mind the passionate diatribes. I hated the canned interviews and too many days off.

Politicians who are in favor of one thing when they're serving in their first term in the Senate who say totally different things now that they are President. Former First Ladies/Senators/Secretaries of State who can't keep their lies straight.

Most of all people who continue to engage in the worst sort of name calling and blasphemous accusations.

Don't bother replying. My next move is to add you to my "ignore" list.

You are talking about politicians, not liberals. And they all say totally different things after elections.

Blasphemous accusations? Look up "blasphemy." I would need to accuse god of something.

I can live with being on your ignore list. I had you on mine for a while but people kept quoting you so I kept seeing your stuff any way.

Funny thing. Wing nuts get nasty but they hate it when they get a dose of their own medicine. They love to dish it out but they can't take it.

I don't think that I have the ability to close this tread, but I think its time to put this topic to rest. This wasn't the intention.

You do have the ability to steer the thread back on topic by posting something germane to what you wanted the thread to be about. It never ceases to amaze me how many people would rather whine that a thread isn't going the way they wished it would instead of taking action to bring it back on-topic.

In all fairness, the original question was (to paraphrase) does anybody know the size of Dr. Weiner's audience and does it skew old?

Ranger was the first one to get political when he said:

"Colleges and universities, however, are a bastion for the views projected on progressive radio shows. Its good for each and every individual to find his/her own niche in the spectrum of beliefs. "

Talkers estimates Dr. Weiner's weekly cume at 5.5 million.

While this or any right-wing political talk show will have listeners of any age, the average if well over 65 (possibly higher since Nielsen stops recording ages above 65).

I question Ranger's assertion that listening to talk radio is the same as "getting involved." Actually, it's the opposite of getting involvement.

Ranger: Are you a college student? Or when you call colleges and universities a "bastion" of the views heard on progressive talk radio are you just repeating what Dr. Weiner and other right-wing hosts have told you? Your comment suggests you think college faculty somehow impose their one-sided opinions but right-wing talk does not? And no "spectrum of beliefs" exists in radio; talk radio is all right-wing, all the time.

"And no "spectrum of beliefs" exists in radio; talk radio is all right-wing, all the time."

Which is why Alan Colmes, Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann and NPR are all on the radio.

To compare NPR with progressive talk is a lie and you know it.

Does progressive talk radio currently air in the market in which you live?
