DOES ANYONE WANT TO GUESS WHAT KIND OF ROCK FORMAT 100.5 WILL BE??

Cumulus has a "Fox" format that is used on their stations in many markets with decent results. The playlist is driven by core classic rock artists that appeal to males (unlike 97.1 The River), with some album-oriented rock tracks occasionally thrown in, more 80's rock (many stations have an 80's at 8 hour with hair bands and heavy metal), and maybe one or two modern rock songs played each hour (Saliva, Fuel, RHCP, Nickelback). Cumulus carries John Boy & Billy in the morning on many of their stations with this Fox format.

I doubt they would go AAA since Dave is having so much trouble.
I doubt they would do a rock-oriented version of Jack since that hasn't worked in the past.
And I doubt they would try to compete directly with 96.1 or 97.1 since they have the weaker signal.

Just my thoughts :)

Well then, let's see what that brand looks like for Cume-less. But I bet in Atlanta it wouldn't be called "Fox", as it's only been a few years since Fox 97. But hey, anything can happen.

Columbus/Starkville, MS: http://www.fox969.com/

Flint, MI: http://www.classicfox.com/

Florence, SC: http://1021thefox.com/
(This one looks different from most of the others)

Kansas City: http://www.101thefox.net/

Montgomery, AL: http://www.wxfx.com/
(this one actually launched as “The Fox” in the early 90s and may not be related to the branding)

Except for KC, these are all very mini markets.

I hope that they do something more "Big City"

The active rock is possible since many indications seem to point to the return of the Regular Guys and Southside Steve. But, I don't see why they would want to go up against Project who is going so strong.

I highly doubt the Christian CHR. We have The Fish which has moderately decent rating and J93 which is low rated (mainly due to poor coverage). That field is saturated and usually those fans are loyal to their given stations.

Besides active rock and the "Fox" format, I see a possibility of a AC format (return of Steve & Vicky?) to compete with B98.5.

I'm an older guy who grew up on album-oriented rock stations, and would welcome the return of guitar driven rock music to the landscape. But, bear this in mind as well... The explosion of the Guitar Hero series, and it is huge among the young male demo, has turned a whole new generation onto bands such as G'n'R, Rage Against the Machine, Motley Crue, Damn Yankees, Blue Oyster Cult... the list goes on. My 12 year old has stopped asking me to download Soulja Boy Tell'um and has started looking for Smashing Pumpkins, ZZ Top and Rush. Perhaps the return of guitar driven rock is the "new alternative"...

Extremely good observation! That's the kind of thinking that good PD's USED TO be able to use to keep a station ahead of the curve. Now, I doubt any suit in the Cumulus offices are tuned-in enough to even think like that.

Great catch, man. I also see a major uptick in catalog CD/download sales for these artists too. If the makers of GH are smart - they'll be out right now signing every licensing deal possible to expand their playlists. This franchise has legs for at least another year or two.

My guess is active rock with little or no classic rock.

Do any of you remember 107-9 the End? It was a two-week stunt that Radio One pulled in 2001 after promising listeners of what was then Hot 97-5 that Hot would end up on 107.9. I actually enjoyed the End and I wondered what their potential would've been had it not been a stunt. It would be cool if 100.5 could somehow pick up where 107.9 left off.

Yes! 107.9 The End was a great radio station for those two weeks and surprised me with how well the playlist was constructed. Radio One has programmed several alternative rock formats in other cities such as Louisville and Philly. Many of these stations billed well and received decent ratings. It may be because Radio One left them alone after acquiring them. I believe that Radio One has sold these channels now since they did not fit well with their portfolio.

Maybe a smart PD here could learn from this, but that's asking too much.

Okay, this is hilarious. It's essentially what The Buzz used to play, and it's called 96 Rock. Somebody at Cumulus has to have a sense of humor.

http://www.yes.com/#WFTK?chart

I was expecting 100.5 to be something with more Classic Rock in it, but something like this might be a "turnabout is fair play" situation - a repeat of what 96.7 The Buzz was to 99x (weak signal vs ratings leader).

It should be Alternative or Active Rock. Why? As I've mentioned in another thread, I would expect Cumulus to take into consideration the effect that the eventual use of Personal People Meters will have on the rating landscape when choosing a direction for 100.5. Due to compliance challenges for M18-34 with the diary methodology, Alt and/or Active Rock stations generally fair better than most other formats when PPMs are introduced. When PPMs are used, the methodology suggests that most stations don't actally have as many listeners as the diary method would suggest. Less so with with young male music stations and more so with Urban formatted stations. Young targeted rock stations tend to rise in ranking among the pack. Most Urban and Spanish stations have significant new challenges.

If Cumulus does not launch a new Alt Rock or Active Rock on 100.5 WKLS will be doing handstands and CBS should move Dave much younger. Perhaps research is showing that the 99X brand needs to be replaced with something new and fresh, but still targeting M18-34s.
