Does WBZ's "Live Local Talk" Make The Station Sound Like Boston is 2nd Rate City

Re: Does WBZ's "Live Local Talk" Make The Station Sound Like Boston is 2nd Rate City

Are any of those outlets doing Boston news 24/7?

The whole trick to making AM work these days is to be as local as possible and superserve your audience.

Simulcasting the CBS TV news at 6:30 is dumb. But I'm sure that's an edict from corporate, because 880 does it too. It's great when they show you something like a chart on the radio.

I don't get TV on radio's appeal either, but apparently the Fox News Channel simulcast on Sirius XM does very well, and Mel Karmazin himself was quoted in an interview years back as saying most of his SiriusXM listening was to CNBC. So maybe the "As you can see here..." problem isn't as big an issue with the 99 percent as it is with the 1 percent -- radio pros and radio fans.

I agree.
Boston is it's own worst enemy with it's desire to be The Hub of The Universe one minute, then
shoots itself in the foot the next by consuming and promoting insipid mediocrity

Okay, so Boston is market #10. There are markets from 11 to 40 that have 24/7 all news stations.

WBZ should focus on what it does best. Why give people a chance to tune out to get news?

With the attitude of "well, we're not big" then you are going to fail, and the Yankees will triumph yet again this year. Talk about a defeatist attitude. Oh yeah, maybe the Giants will beat the Pats again in the Superbowl.

A talk show is just as expensive as doing all news. A host, screener and producer. For news there's an anchor, a producer and usually the sports etc. is "flown in" from Metro or somewhere else on a network at that hour.

It's a pity 'BZ no longer has an overnight talk show.

Re: Does WBZ's "Live Local Talk" Make The Station Sound Like Boston is 2nd Rate City

Well technically they have no full time overnight host for Sun thru Thu nights but they have the various ones like
M White Jr., Jen Brien etc . then Jordan Rich and Bradley Jay the other nights

Absolutely. "Hub of the Universe" was never meant to be taken seriously, it was a gently poke at those whose worldview didn't extend beyond Boston.

Mine was a not so gentle poke at the meaningless babble they have on WBZ after 8:00PM

Re: Does WBZ's "Live Local Talk" Make The Station Sound Like Boston is 2nd Rate City

I think WBZ-1030's using "Live, Local Talk" is meant to be a jab at WRKO-680, which although running some local talk shows during the day, is all-syndicated talk most nights.

But with 'BZ's huge signal, Dan Rea, Jen Brien, Bradley Jay and Jordan Rich are in effect hosting "national" shows.
