Don K Reed's "Doo-Wop Shop" 33rd Anniversary Show on CBS-FM

Has anybody catched CBS-FM this past Sunday? Don K Reed is playing nothing but doo-wop you know why? Because it is the 33rd anniversary of the "Doo-Wop Shop". I remember the "Solid Gold Jukebox" with Rick McCaffery on the former WBPM "Cool 92.9" back when he was at WCZX's "Oldies 97.7" and then WBPM's original at 94.3 when it was "Cool 94.3" in the HV listening area, but I do love the "Doo-Wop Cruise" segment from 9:00 PM until 11:00 PM and it was a great show, much better than Don K Reed, but I will put an aircheck from this past Sunday. I remember listening to the "Doo-Wop Shop" with Don K Reed for many, many years since I was a kid right up until his final show on 8/25/02, but I do have the aircheck of his final show somewhere, but first here is the aircheck from CBS-FM this past Sunday.

Show sounded fantastic. Listened to it driving back to BKlyn from NJ while stuck in traffic. Nice to hear some of those old hits, even if i'm not in the target demo.

hey, Andrew, don't sweat it, baby! ;) Even when I was in the target demo, I was NEVER in the target demo - even when I first started listening to the station in 1984, FOR ME it was FIRST and FOREMOST about the doowopps, and then everything else (even up until today) has and is falling into place for me musically - it don't matter what the age is, what matters is that this is a GREAT station playing GREAT music with DJs that are FUN and ENTERTAINING to listen to - THAT'S WHAT MATTERS AND THAT'S WHAT SHOULD MATTER!!

There are about a million better places to hear a wide variety of doo wop music than
Don K. Reed, the world's most bland dj, on CBS-FM then or now.

care to elaborate, truth??? Lets hear it....aside from Don.....

My vote goes to Tony O on WHVW in Poughkeepsie, 950 am, sundays 1-3...this guy knows the music cold...

590buddy ;D

Be that as it may regarding the "blandness" of Don, the music is still very fun and hard to find. That's what made the show interesting (for me) and also listenable for such a long time. Even if Don is "bland", the content of the program is what matters. Mayonaise is bland, yet it compliments the flavor of the cold cuts we put on a sandwich.

As a side note, I don't think we appreciate the full impact or influence that early rock and roll has in the NYC market. That music has been a soundtrack for the city, whether it's in movies, tv shows (take the Sopranos for instance) or as part of local cultural entertainment. It has become iconic with New York - just as early 90's rap is iconic with Long Beach, CA. There is something very familar about it - the same way that the smell of hamburgers on a bbq are familar. I think that we have lost touch with power that a regional "brand" or "icon" can have. I would be willing to bet that is DWS came back on a full time basis, it would definatelty show some moderate success for it's timeslot slot on CBS-FM. It's on sunday night, it could sell and it would certianly entertain a nice, niche audience with disposable income. Summertime and Oldies go hand in hand, especially in this part of the country. So what if DKR is boring? You don't need talking for 3 minutes between each song. Get in, play the cut, get out. The one thing that made me stick on the station for so long was that for the first time in quite a while, it sounded like it was alive....
