Doubtful for now that an AM news, talk, or sports station would // on FM here

In Portland OR a rock station called KUFO used to play Beck--either Jeff, or the "I'm a Loser" guy.
Now they run Beck--as in, Glenn.

They are now simulcasting KXL-AM on FM.
http://www.kxl.com/

>>Newsradio 750 KXL has taken its news, information and talk shows to the FM dial effective immediately, now as a simulcast on 101.1FM. As a result, KXL-AM/FM will now deliver news and information, featuring in-depth reporting on local, national and international stories, weather and the most frequent and thorough traffic reports throughout the day to a broader audience utilizing the powerful signal at 101.1FM.

News, talk, or sports stations have begun simulcasts on FM or moved to FM in several cities. Would it happen in Boston? Right now, it's doubtful but who knows. After all, WCRB will always be on 102.5,
right? WBCN will always rock on terrestrial FM 104.1. And...a sports station on FM, are you kidding?
(In other words, you never know)

WRKO: Ratings are pitiful with PPMs. So would Entercom try to bring their programming to "a whole new audience" on FM just as Alpha is doing with KXL? Not unless Entercom can buy another FM. They sure
wouldn't make 93.7 HowieFM, not with how Mike is doing (and now they're hiring DJs). Would they move RKO to 97.7 or 107.3? Prob not. The signal is halfway decent at least by day, and I don't know if they'd
move it to FM

WEEI: Yes they have FM simulcasts down in RI, Western MA, the Cape, but would they put one within the 128 belt? Again, WMKK is doing well with what they have...the signal of 850 isn't bad by day. At night there's WCRN to carry the Sox games again; WBOQ covers North Shore with Sox games, etc.

WBZ: That powerhouse signal at 1030 does pretty well. I suppose if WODS cratered in the ratings they might consider it (Dan Rea, next on 103.3!) but the ol-- er, classic pop audience is still pretty reliable.

It has happened in Prov (630/99.7), Worcester (580/94.1), Albany (an FM station simulcasting WGY),
Portland OR (see above; btw radio-info notes that Clear Channel's KPOJ in Port OR does well with
prog. talk)...Wash DC...and so on.

Highly doubtful but if Greater sold WTKK to Entercom... "WRKO AM 680 and FM 96.9". Hmmph,
HIGHLY unlikely, but if they did they might at least get a no-static at all signal.

Are companies doing this because they feel they can get more (and younger) listeners on FM?
Or is part of it because some of their FMs are getting crappy ratings, and 'might as well'...?

And oh, Weekly Dig--how's that hot rumor of "Entercom buys WFNX, moves Mike there, and puts
WEEI on 93.7" working out? :)

Alpha announcement--hey news and talk sounds great on FM doesn't it? From KXL site
>>“Today begins a new chapter in Portland radio as we bring the news and information heard on KXL to the FM dial at 101.1,” commented Alpha Broadcasting President/COO Bob Proffitt. “The future of news is on FM and we are excited to be the first to make the move. Alpha Broadcasting is committed to improving KXL’s reach and solidifying our position as the live and local leader in Portland radio, both on-air and online. With our robust news department, solid programming line-up and 85 years of heritage, we now offer our exclusive content on the powerful signal at 101.1 FM, exposing a whole new audience to the station and providing information to them as they’ve never heard it before…with the great fidelity of the FM signal. We have seen this trend growing across the country and are very excited to bring this incredible station to so many more radio listeners of Portland and Southwest Washington.”

My idea, if WRKO was to go on FM is to:
On weekdays put like this
6am-9am America's Morning News
9am-Noon Laura Ingraham
Noon-3pm America's Morning News
3pm-6pm Jerry Doyle
6pm-9pm Michael Savage
9pm-Midnight Rusty Humphries
Midnight-1am Rusty Humphries Replay
1am-6am Red Eye Radio
-Weekends- AC/HOT AC Music (Almost like New Jersey 101.5-Weekdays they have talk, weekends they have music)

and keep 680AM the same as it is now.

That's my idea.

But as I said before.
Nobody ever listen to me. All the time I give good ideas here, everyone always get mad at me and say very bad things to me
It's just ideas.
Program Management Personal knows what they want to do. These are just ideas

Howie is under contract to them till late 2012 and has some ratings--and an 11 station network. A station like RKO isn't going to go syndie in pm drive. WXKS, yes (with Hannity) and if they could get Howie when his contract ends and can afford him, THEY would go after him. Local matters. This is why WRKO, WTKK, WEEI, and Sports Hub have so much local. Even WXKS has local in mornings with Katz. When they were prog. talk they had no local daily show, now they do. Not that the ratings are too hot, but the PPM ratings are disappointing for many stations. (And they might make more money with Katz talking about local politics instead of a national host. Not much money, but more money.)

RKO in morning drive gets more money by having local content. If they throw in the towel and go syndie in am drive, the next move would be to dump talk totally and become La Mega 680 con
mucha musica.

Some other stations have run America's Morning News (I think WNSH had it before they flipped)
but a major Boston station prob wouldn't touch it. Ingraham, I could see them keeping. They get $$
for running noontime business, and stay local with McPhee. Call her voice horrible but the tough street kid from Wakefield (now in Eastie) is local.

Jerry Doyle--again, Howie rules the 3 pm roost. They would not dare.

I don't say bad things about you--I am just saying the way that the radio biz does things in a certain way. Me, I've said before I'd love for Mike 93.7 to simulcast Sox games so I can hear them clearly at work, but they don't listen to me either. They build an identity with Mike's music and wouldn't want to interrupt it for 3+ hours nightly. Now, you could say "yes but if they run the
Sox they'd get lots of listeners too and maybe they'd stay tuned for the music". But they won't.
(Tech. that was one reason they put the Sox, most games, on RKO at first. People have radio on for Sox game and keep it on 680 when they get up in morning, or they hear promos for talk shows)

nobody ever thought that a legendary station like kufo would become a talk station either...entercom won't do it because all they care about are the sports guys but cbs and clear channel certainly could

Did they park the KUFO calls anywhere? Not only heritage, but memorable and a good fit for rock. Hate to see 'em wind up on a brokered time station in Idaho.....

For now I can't picture Talk1200 also becoming "Talk94.5" or "Talk107.9" but again, if they acquired another FM (Clr Chnl)...
CBS may figure WBZ is just fine on AM only with its strong signal and it gets ratings (if WODS
cratered for several periods, maybe a simulcast)

What's the difference? ::)

@Lauro: I won't mock your suggested FM lineup for WRKO... but if I were WRKO and had both an AM and an FM signal, I would want to bring at least two local talents over to the FM side, if not simulcast them on both AM and FM. Running different syndicated shows on both the AM and FM simultaneously isn't far fetched, either.

thank you all for the (good) words and advide this time.
It was just ideas.
As I said too, Radio Program Management Personal knows more than me and they know what they ant and don't want
Thank you all for saying (good) words to me and good advice.
Personnally I also like Michelle McPhee. yes, she can sound ??? (too) exciting, but all in all, I enjoyed listenning to her when she was most recently on 96.9

D to the J: Agreed

As for Glenn Beck/ "I'm a Loser", he was doing well on both tv and radio for awhile and had bestselling books but supp. lately his TV ratings may be going down (a rumor went around that Fox would dump him; he denies). Would he eventually leave the tv show? The radio show? On conserv. message boards he has his defenders and also those not into him.

also re: Beck
Haven't heard too much of his radio show but it seems it has one part where it's like a friendly,
funny morning show and then another where he gets all dramatic and tries to accent the "this country is headed for serious trouble if we don't do something, friends" theme...

Laurojim: yes if anything we're pointing out what radio programming people tend to do--it may not always make sense to us but they have their reasons and if it works they stick with it. Howie Carr, for example, may not get as high ratings as he used to, but he would draw more listeners--and ad money--in rather than Jerry Doyle, and stations like WRKO would rather go local than national in pm drive. This, with am drive, is where they make their money. People want to hear Howie discuss local/regional and national issues, while Doyle gets run on a delay later on.

Love his show and I run a ping list on free republic
He can get suprisingly good ratings at time; a couple yrs back hes was #1 in his time slot

Hate to break this to you, my com-padres o' Beantown, but it's even happening in larger-than-Boston markets this decade. Atlanta, where I now rest this radiohead...has transferred its TOP news/talk AM broadcasts to a simulcast on FM, and the same has been done for the TOP sports talker, which is run by a separate parent company. You are going to see the eventual transfer of traditional terrestrial AM radio into the next terrestrial FM format, while most MX leaders on FM will have their signals moved to HD carriers, or just moved "elsewhere". Not now, perhaps, but before the first "1" in 2011 becomes a "2", expect the transition to be complete.

Trust me, for I know of what I speak today...

Chances of that are slim-to-none. Jibguy is a media-minnow compared to the big fishies. - And "easy as the breeze" was never used on 96.9 to my knowledge. And ding ding has never been heard on 740, except for the beginning of "Calypso" by John Denver.
