Doyle Brunson, called the Godfather of Poker, dies at 89

I recall reading an interview that Brunson did about 10 years ago where he said he was amazed that Poker was now considered a "sport", was often televised nationally, and how large the pots had grown...He spoke of his time growing up as a poker player years back and discussed some of the shady places where he'd played. He explained how he'd been been beaten up, robbed and some of the places he played in were notorious for winning at all costs..Meaning you either lost at the table, or if you won, you'd be mugged on the way out.

Too bad. There was a time a few years back when I watched a lot of WSOP on ESPN. The coverage was so good. I've always loved the commentary of Norman Chad. But it was during that time when I became familiar with Doyle, aka Texas Dolly. I also enjoyed Kid Poker, The Poker Brat and The Magician. All great characters. Great TV.
