Dr Laura gone from radio at end of 2010

Really, it's about time. After Dr Laura repeated the "N" word on her radio show more times than you hear in one rap song, she said her "1st Amendment rights have been violated" (or something like that) and will be stepping down when her contract ends at the end of 2010.

I listened to Dr Laura for a couple of years while I was spending my days on the road. It was kinda by default, since KRLD decided to drop Jody Dean's great afternoon talk show in favor of Dr Laura. When you chipped away the BS, Dr Laura actually *USED* to have a real message there. But when she got on her political and religious agenda, it was yawns-ville. Then the naked photos knocked her off her high horse. Then her TV show, canned after one year, cleared at 3AM by most stations, and later was revealed that she packed her audience with paid extras and pre-planned questions. Then it was her anti-gay diatribes that got her in hot water. Oh, and the long-lingering question about how a doctorate in history gives her the authority to dispense psychological advice?

But it was a nice run that netted her millions, a show that often served as a constant platform to peddle her own books (where do you think Hannity learned the technique?) and was a place to flaunt her self-righteousness and holier-than-thou attitude and to brag on her perfect life and perfect family. As I've said before, that type of radio is pretty well dead, and I'm sure a review of her current affiliate list would show her mostly on religious stations and out of the mainstream.

I think Dr. L was buried somewhere on KSKY's schedule recently.

Any one remember the hissy fit she through here in Dallas during a personal appearance because she didn't like the smell of the perfume of one of the volunteers assigned to drive her around?

Her doctorate is in physiology, but she is unqualified by education to offer psychological advice to anyone.

She owes her career to one man -- Bill Ballance.

maybe she could get a gig with KKDA?

What kinda comment is that????

Much like what Mike Shannon wrote, I used to listen to her when she was on KRLD. At first she was entertaining & had a worthwhile message. After awhile her show took on a more preachy, anti-gay (on some days) tone. One of my coworkers at the time (She had told me about the show & gotten me to start listening.) & I would talk about how Dr. Laura's show was changing. Before long (before KRLD dumped her) we had both stopped listening.

It always amazed me to hear her berate caller after caller - and these people would still call in. Like they would be the chosen ones who wouldn't be eviscerated.

Some people will endure anything just to hear their own voice over the radio. I'm amazed she lasted as long as she did.

I wonder if she paid him back in services.

In the past couple of years, she went from WORD 100.7 FM middays to KSKY 660 overnights to 1160 mornings. 1160 still has her listed on their website, but for the last 2-3 weeks it's been a local Christian show. I'm pretty sure they pulled her before the n*word debacle.

I must admit, I still tuned in occasionally because I found the callers' problems interesting. (Sort of like how I read Dear Abby columns but skip over the advice parts.)

I care. Dr. Laura does a show that I find terrible, so I don't listen. Her being forced out is as offensive to me as I find her show. We have given the wrong people control over what we get to listen to. Sponsors should not dictate programming, even though they do have the right to chose what they will or will not support. Everyone in media should at least care about this. I heard what she said, can anyone explain to me why her repeating a word without context is so offensive to anyone? Have we actually gotten to the point where a word can make everyone forget common sense? (don't answer, I am not naive, just disgusted). But don't say you don't care, that makes you part of the problem.

So true. I couldn't agree with you more. I actually did hear the "N word call", and agreed with Dr. Laura and her position. It was an interesting call to say the least, but if you take the emotion out of the argument, you will hear her point. If you haven't listened to the call, I'm not so sure you should even be commenting on whether or not you agree with the backlash. As a broadcaster, this definitely concerns me and it should y'all too. I dug and looked at (or listened to) the facts, and strongly support her.

Schlessinger and other national talk hosts are glad to have those sponsors that help keep them steak-fed and upper bracket salaried. They shouldn't get mad at all if they want to stop buying ad time, or if a protest group gets them to do so. The talk-bots work for the advertisers, the advertisers don't work for them.

If you want uncensored, largely unassailable content freedom? Write. Lecture. Start a privately funded website, podcast, or net radio show. Or start barking in the street.

Ballance was bitter to the day he died because she never recognized him publicly as the one who helped her get started in radio and mentored her.

Ironically, Ballance had much more talent than she ever had.

Dr. Laura thinks racial slur use by Whites shouldn't be offensive because Black comedians and rappers say them. As long as you're 'smart' enough to know that the bad guys on '24' actually endorse and contribute to domestic terrorism in reality, this position should make perfect sense.
