Dr. Laura's New Home on 1/3/11: SiriusXM Radio

and now she will really become irrelevant just like Howard Stern.

While I might have paid for Siruius XM in order to get Howard, I would never want to pay for Dr. Laura. Howard is entertaining she is not, plus some of her diatribes could cause serious harm to already vulnerable people. In my mind she is more dangerous than phony televangelists and she preys on the same kinds of vulnerable souls.

In the end I am too cheap to pay for radio and put up with the logistics of being able to receive satellite radio where I mostly am when I can listen.

Stern is soooooo irrelevant, right? How many people can have their producer write a book and make it to the NY Times Bestseller list? How many sidekicks write a book and make it to #1 on that same list? How many shows have a guest on, and the same day that person is one of the top 10 trending searches on Google? Glen Beck? Sean Hannity? Rush? Only one...Howard Stern. If he was irrelevant, no one would be listening (it's estimated that 70% of Sirius/XM subscribers are listeners....that's 14 million), no one would be advertising and no big name guest would be on the show. Just cause you don't listen doesn't mean Howard is irrelevant. Dr. Laura however, IS. (I would, however, love to hear her on Howard's show as a guest some time. THAT would be some fun radio!)

Howard would slice her, dice her, and turn her into julienne fries. I would love to hear that one too and for that I would subscribe just to get it, but she wouldn't do it because even Dr. Laura is smart enough to see that disaster (for her) before the fact. Howard Stern is a good interviewer, even on straight interviews but he doesn't tolerate idiots. He skewers them like Daniel Carver if you recall. That man was too stupid to realize he was being ridiculed, and Dr. Laura despite my low opinion of her just isn't that dumb.

Can't put Stern and Dr. Laura in the same category. Not even close to being the same. Stern is hilarious. Dr. Laura is just God awful with no redeeming value whatsoever.

80% to 85% of satellite subscribers don't listen to Stern... if you look at the last publicly released ratings for satellite channels, his cume was 1.25 million, approximately. If anything, since that rating report appeared, the satellite novelty value is a bit less... even if XM customers have access to him.

Stern's numbers are about 1/10th of the terrestrial radio figures; that is actually fine as he provides image, an additional subscriber base and other benefits to the medium.

Fact vs. Opinion time.

Fact: there are likely just as many people who think Stern is awful and Dr Laura is terrific as there are those who feel as you do... based on the terrestrial cume of each from the time both were on terrestrial radio.

Taste, lifestyle, gender, age... all factors in determining why a person might like one or the other.

From the Orange County Register's Gary Lycan column, a Dr. Laura interview: http://www.ocregister.com/entertainment/sirius-277955-schlessinger-radio.html

A live call in show on satellite radio where most of the listeners are in cars? New cause of accidents, people talking to Dr. Laura while driving, could become worse than texting.

She will likely be sorely missed here in Ottumwa Iowa after she departs KBIZ and goes celestial (or is that extraterrestrial?) . I am anxiously awaiting the announcement of her replacement for their evening line up.

...KJLL Tucson has already dumped Master Laura for Michael Smerconish (and Lou Dobbs for Leslie Marshall, as well). The station got rid of two humanoid slugs and took one on ;D ...

Apparently the local keepers of the airwaves are hanging on to Dr. Laura until the final second. Hopefully we will get neither Smerconish nor the boring Lou Dobbs as a replacement. When the former News/Talk KGIL had Dobbs he was the weakest link in what could have been a good lineup, he sounds as if he is terminally constipated. ::)
