Drobny's Nova M Radio to begin new progressive talk network; Mike Malloy returns

From novamradio.com:

We the People,
It is with great excitement and optimism that I announce today the formation of a new progressive talk radio network. Myself along with my partners, Anita and Sheldon Drobny; the original cofounders of the Air America Radio Network, want to be the first to tell all you “truth seekers” that the original truth seeker himself Mike Malloy will be born again live on the public airwaves. The planned second coming (barring any apocalypse) is scheduled for October 30, 2006. The Mike Malloy Show will initially broadcast live, from 9PM -12 Midnight (EST) on Nova M Radio affiliates 1480-AM KPHX Phoenix.

In addition, I’m equally excited to announce our strategic partnership with Joe Trippi and associates. Joe Trippi revolutionized electoral politics in America with his instrumental role in Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential campaign, raising over

$40 million in small donor contributions over the internet. Joe created a new paradigm in how campaigns locally and nationally are conducted by leveraging the scope and breadth of innovative internet-based technologies and digital tools. Joe and his team will help us reach out to millions of us who share common values and common goals.

Also joining our team will be internationally renowned pollster John Zogby, President and CEO of Zogby International. John will be co-hosting a weekly one hour show, “The Pulse of the Nation” where John polls particular hot button issues from politics and pop culture to the War in Iraq and stem cell research. Each program will include expert guests and audience participation. At the end of each show John will reveal the secret results of the poll and each listener will then know whether or not they have their finger on “The Pulse of the Nation”!

We will continue to build upon the foundation laid by our predecessors and will work tirelessly to fulfill our fiduciary responsibilities to our investors. Equally important, we will with the millions of faithful progressive listeners uphold our vision to promote freedom, social justice, economic justice and peace worldwide.

We have many more exciting announcements to make; new talent, name of new network and so on. So stay tuned and keep up to date at our web site, www.novamradio.com ! And as always, from the bottom of my bleeding liberal heart, God Bless America!

In Solidarity,

Mike Newcomb, MD
CEO & Chairman, Nova M Radio, Inc.

Re: Drobny's Nova M Radio to begin new progressive talk network; Mike Malloy ret

Oh, Jeez. Don't these people ever learn? (Guess not!)

Medicare Mike, The Sun City quack. Mr. and Mrs. Moneybags. A fund-raiser. A political pollster. And nobody who knows a damn thing about radio in the bunch. Haven't we seen this movie before?

Why Howard Dean's Internet fund raiser? Is this how they plan to finance the operation? Listener contributions. $50.00 bumper stickers. Why go to all the trouble trying to sell spots.

And what is their first move? Mike Malloy back in his old time slot, which already over-crowded with liberal hosts. Lionel. Colmes. Peter Werbe for AAR's turnkey stations. Malloy wan't doing too well in the time-slot against the libtalk competition the first time around. And now these Nova M idiots - clear proof you don't need brains to have lots of money - have dithered long enough so the stations had already filled Malloy's spot before they made their move. And what is it about libtalkers that so many of them want to schedule shows in late evening, radio's dead time?

And once a week Zogby will come on and read poll results? Can't wait.

This already has train wreck written all over it. Lionel is not going to lose any sleep. Neither is Rob Glaser.

Wait A Minute

The press release quoted above is well worded and reads like an authentic press release.

However, the link provided does not have this release. Neither does the KPHX website. Neither do the major press release distributor sites. Searches on Google and Yahoo! did not find the press release.

Where did you find this press release? Please provide an accurate link.

Re: Drobny's Nova M Radio to begin new progressive talk network; Mike Malloy ret

Not that strange for the people behind libtalk. Pretty typical. ::)

Anyway, thanks for re-checking.

Stay tuned. Maybe something (similar or different) will pop up on the site later.

I think this means it is a safe bet that the Drobny's have lost the control battle over AAR, meaning it will go into Glaser's hands. If this is more of a syndication thing (after all, how many hosts can you put together with a guaranteed slot only on Drobny's own outlets), it's not such a bad thing - more choices is good. I am surprised Malloy didn't end up on Sirius.

If they are planning some 24/7 program network a-la AAR, I think they can forget it unless AAR turns off the lights. Stations are going to cherry pick the programs they are interested in at this point. Malloy could work on a time-shifted basis post-Lionel. He really seems more like a late night host to me anyway.

As to its fundraising model, with Trippi involved, it might actually be very integrated with liberal bloggers and raise money that way from individual listeners a-la NPR. There are some liberal bloggers out there that can generate big $$$ in a short amount of time.

Re: Drobny's Nova M Radio to begin new progressive talk network; Mike Malloy ret

...don't expect Malloy to *stay* in 9-Midnight Eastern. As the time approaches for affiliates' AAR program contracts to expire, look for more of them to dump those -- including Franken in some cases, provided Franken doesn't bail to run for the Senate early -- and Malloy to move into daylight hours. And don't think he won't get placed on Sirius, either -- right now on Radio Left 146, from 6 to 9 Eastern they're running a "special repeat" of Bill Press for the second time in twelve hours. And note that Press is only listed on Sirius' own site for only the live morning feed. Expect for that repeat to get dumped, Stephanie Miller to move into that slot and Malloy to go live in Miller's current place...

I'm not surprised by this move. Drobny and Malloy have been friends for a long time, and both have been at odds with AAR management for some time. I kinda figured Drobny would start his own syndication effort.

This may sound like small potatoes, but I think it's a good way to get things going. Drobny's got two stations so far (Phoenix and Little Rock). And don't be surprised if a few other stations pick up Malloy. He does have a pretty dedicated following, and I'm sure he'll resurface in places like San Francisco, Minneapolis or Madison.

While I feel it's better to program to get ratings and money rather than promote an agenda, the addition of Joe Trippi is a smart move. The guy's shrewd, knows how to do things on a grassroots level, and has a lot of credibility. Don't discount him.

I don't see these guys going full-bore with a 24/7 network right away. The market can't support it. But they've already got a foundation set with Malloy and Newcomb, so we'll see what happens.

Deja Vu, All Over Again!

Apparently the primary purpose of this one-show "network" is to send a public "f___ you" to Rob Glaser. I wouldn't trust the bunch to plan to a Sunday School picnic.

While looking for the press release cl posted, I read through Nova M's home page which is mostly an inept attempt to rope marks - ah, I mean solicit individual investors.

They say that "'Dr Mike' is a nationally syndicated radio talk-show." He's not just a host, folks; he's the whole show! Either way, is he still syndicated? The only other station I heard of carrying his show was KRXA, Monterey, and Medicare Mike is no longer listed on their website (although KPHX's website says they are still running Monterey's Peter B. Collins in PM drive).

They go on to say how right-wing talk broadcasts 40,000 hours a week compared to 3,000 hours for progressive talk. If they'd gone for listener-hours the disparity would be even greater. But never mind: They have a way to fix all this:
Nova M Radio, LLC believes this “bottleneck” in the growth of progressive talk radio can be circumvented by directly purchasing underperforming radio stations at below market value prices and replacing existing formats with progressive content.
So far, they have not bought anything. They have LMAs in two markets: Phoenix and Little Rock. (LMAs worked so well for AAR.) Apparently, station owners are not rushing to sell "underperforming" (sic) stations at below market value. Surprise, surprise.

Now this whole pitch starts to border on securities fraud. They say donors to political campaigns are left with no "tangible assets" but Nova M will provide "personal satisfaction" and capital appreciation.
The senior management of Nova M Radio is confident that these tangible assets will likely increase in value under our management thus mitigating any potential risk.

Radio station licenses are a very limited commodity. The FCC protects broadcasters by limiting the number of signals reaching the local communities. Nova M Radio will always have the opportunity to liquidate its assets with the sale of its FCC license, studios and transmitters at a premium.
Really! Clear Channel has been selling stations and clusters lately - sometimes for less than they paid originally. It happens. It's happened to others. Maybe these people should talk to station brokers instead of a political fund-raisers (and each other).

Further there is not track record to suggest that (1) this bunch has the ability profitably to manage radio stations or that (2) the progressive talk format is necessarily profitable. Somebody with an under-performing station can make more money with a brokered format or paid religion, or by selling out to somebody will do brokered programming and/or paid religion. (Newcomb must have a short memory; that's what happened with his prior station, even with some of the better numbers in the progressive talk format.)

Apparently, these stumble-bums have given up on trying to sell progressive talk radio to advertisers (hence, the fund-raiser), and they've given up trying to sell the format to station operators. Owners won't take progressive talk - even as a turnkey format? No problem. Nova M will buy them out for less than the station is worth. If these people are not talking to station brokers, sellers are. Or maybe Drobny, a tax accountant by profession, really just wants a write-off.

This sounds like people with huge egos operating in an environment which only allows positive feedback. (Basic cybernetics: A system receiving only positive feedback oscillates out of control.) The result will be further to discredit the progressive talk format in the eyes of the radio industry and advertising community - and to make the ditto-heads happy.

On the plus side: At least Drobny hasn't brought in Evan Cohen again - yet.

What a success--don't you remember President Dean taking the oath of office? The "yearrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!"
cry at the end was truly a moment to remember :)

Actually AAR gave him an f.u.--they owe $10 million to him (won't repay his loan...and I think Glaser
resigned from the AAR board). Cue Mojo Nixon's "Where The Hell's My Money?" here :)

He's a fund raiser. And he did raise funds.

Re: Drobny's Nova M Radio to begin new progressive talk network; Mike Malloy ret

True, and despite his candidate faltering in the early primaries he did revolutionize fundraising by Net.

Re: Drobny's Nova M Radio to begin new progressive talk network; Mike Malloy ret

Things the owners of this new libtalk network should do.
Options and suggestions:

1) Don't bother. Give up.

2) Acknowledge that libs control TV, movies, magazines,
newspapers, music, and public radio and that really ought to be enough

3) If you're going to hire "entertainers" to be talk hosts,
get GOOD ones, not like the boring Frankenfraud or sleaze
king Je-rry! Je-rry!

4) Produce one or two half decent CENTRIST shows and try to land them on conservative talk stations, instead of
doing far-left-wing rants about the President being
Hitler. Sure, the ratings won't be as high as conservative hosts, but people would rather hear Alan Colmes than
Mike Malloy or Randi Rhodes. (And even he would get
weak ratings...)

5) Don't hire "writers". WRITERS? This is a talk radio
show not Saturday Night Live! Let the hosts show their talent and attract callers.

WRITERS???

6) PAY YOUR BILLS and be responsible. Don't run up
$20 million in debt. Don't think that the government
is going to bail you out, or that you can do a pledge
drive a la public radio/NPR

7) Realize "radio is a business". Makes money.
Puts out good product. Conservatives have known
this for years. Liberals ignore it.

8) focus on being entertaining and informative rather than
using shows to try and win elections for your cause. The latter
may soon follow but the former is essential...and will
gain you higher ratings and you'll actually make money.

That being said, Rush, Hannity, Savage, Ingraham, O'Reilly,
et al have nothing to worry about.

9) Don't give control of your radio network to a Guam Republican.

Really, nearly all of AAR's travail comes down to the original investors believing Evan Montvale Cohen when he told them that he had $45 million available to burn through while AAR built its audience. Their 2004 business plan was built upon that premise. If he had been telling the truth, AAR would be recognized as a modest success story today.

But Cohen was lying.

The original investors failed to do due diligence before they handed over the network to Cohen, and that's why they are where they are now. Nearly every business fault they have experienced followed inevitably from that single error.

Radio Jeopardy:

I'll take dummies in radio for $60, Alex.

The answer is: Sheldon and Anita Drobny.

Buzzzzz

Who were Air America Radio's original investors who failed to do due diligence before they handed over the network to Cohen?

You'll get no argument from me. They were the lead investors. And they screwed up big time.

We may hope that they have learned a lesson or two from the experience.

what's the definition of 'insanity'? ;D

One person's insanity is another person's persistence (also called "staying-the-course.")

What seems to be different here is they seem to have abandoned the advertiser-supported model for the donor-supported model (not necessarily listener-supported), not unlike what religious broadcasters use. I don't much like it myself but they do have a "gospel" they want to preach and if they come right out and say "our agenda is completely political - not commercial - Help save the country; send money." - it might work. They could even incorporate as a non-profit and avoid paying taxes. No frequencies on AM are set aside for non-commercial use, so they could still sell spots. All they have to do is be upfront - for a change - about what they intend to do. Their fund raiser got big bucks online for a candidate nobody had heard of. Sounds like he might be able to get money for a dark horse progressive talk network even if nobody can hear it.
