DX ALERT - WTIC 1080 Going off the Air 3 Nights in A Row for Maintainence

Listening right now and have a mix of WOAP w/ oldies (thought they went off at night, guess not), WNWI w/ ethnic music, and the Mariners-Twins baseball game from presumed KYMN which would be a new log. KVNI is also carrying this game live right now, but I'm not that optimistic. Not even a sign of WTIC here before the scheduled sign off time.

Anyone else monitoring 1080 tonight?

edit: Just confirmed KYMN with an ID - new one for me.

I heard a very distant adult standards or oldies 1080 station playing Mama & Papa's "Monday, Monday" at 11: 50 PM EST. Not sure what station that is... ???

You heard WOAP Owosso, MI. "The Big 10-80". I caught the same song here at the same time. These guys should be off at night, but... Catch them while you can!

Thanks, kilokat7. I also heard gospel music on another 1080, either WKBY Chatham, VA (near NC border), WUFO Anherst, NY (Buffalo area) or WWDR Murfreesboro, NC, all supposed to be daytimers. I guess I am seeing some daytimers including WOAP on air at night.

What's the point of anybody saying what they heard if nobody says where they are? If I want to look up what's on 1080, I could go to Radio-Locator. BTW I'm in Colchester, CT, about 30 miles east of WTIC and really couldn't make out anything specific last night at 11:30pm.

I'm in northern VA and last night just before midnight I heard at least 2 stations, while WTIC was off the air. One of them was supposedly a daytimer in MI, however, early this morning I saw on Radio-Locator that WOAP has a construction permit to operate both day and night and may have started doing so.

I was excited at first when I saw this thread, then once I thought about it here in Ohio WTIC has been a non-factor (at least without a really good radio) for a few years. You have to dig it out of the mud now, whereas as recently as five or six years ago it was much louder on the frequency at night. KRLD does get in here during the winter sometimes, but during the summer 1080 mostly is a mish-mash.
Then again, maybe a lack of interference from WTIC will improve the channel, even if slightly.
I wish this was happening a few months from now, because even thought DX is better than it was at the height of summer, it'll be much better in October or November.

Might be kinda cool to send copies of any DX Reports to the engineers at WTIC. They might be interested in what is heard on their "home" frequency.

I'm hearing some jazzy big band stuff...hmmm, must track it down! Any clues?

That would be KYMN but you can verify with the web stream here.

WNWI is also strong here (West Michigan) and their stream is here for anyone looking for Chicago's "Ethnic Superstation".

No sign of WOAP here, contrary to last night at this time.

What's amazing now is that WTIC could be off the air at night and people from outside the northeast probably don't even notice. From the far north suburbs of Chicago, I have only heard them once and, even then, they were in the mud and I never got a positive ID. Yet, I remember 25 years ago when WTIC would be quite strong into the midwest and fighting with KRLD. Now KRLD is the clear winner. But with all of the new signals getting the FCC blessing to transmit at night on 1080, the entire channel is a mess.

It is a microcosm of what is killing the MW band.

That echoes my thoughts exactly here in Ohio, but you put it much better.

Very true. Back in the late 80's I could drive from Toledo to Saginaw while listening to a
Hartford Whalers game and barely skip a beat.

Here in SW Ohio, it is WKJK/1080 in Louisville night & day. Night signal is weak but reliable. I'm on the western side of Cincinnati, so my location favors reception of WKJK.

Seldom hear WTIC or KRLD, even during sunrise or sunset skip, but then I seldom look for them at the appropriate times.
