E-Skipping from St. Petersburg- afternoon Tues 12 July 2011

Haven't had the time to dx all afternoon, but I did receive two different 90.1's from Texas, one KERN (I believe were the call letters) from Dallas/Ft. Worth and the other was from San Angelo, TX. I had them narrowed down and then confirmed them at the top of the hour i.d. (fortunately they did not both i.d. at the same time; one would come in for half a minute and then the other.)

Just now, received "the Bridge", KTGR from Kansas City at 90.9 (heard the 5pm/1700 TOH i.d.)

Also would like to know what anyone else in the area has been receiving (GarFla?)or anyone else from Spring Hill,FL south to Port Charlotte.

And on semi-local WSMR 89.1 if I adjusted the antenna I was not receiving the usual suspect that sometimes interfers(WUFT Gainesville) but another Classical music station; could not get an i.d.

All of these were picked up on a Sangean PR-D5 (now discontinued, btw) with just the telescopic antenna.

Heard WJIS 88.1 FM, Bradenton, FL on my Honda car radio "Joy FM" around 3:20 p.m. CT. Tried the non-comm band up to 92 MHz,
didn't hear anything else that stood out except on 88.7: They were calling themselves "Way-FM" but they were giving out a phone number with 931 area code, so it was WAYM 88.7 Spring Hill (Nashville), TN. So this wasn't WAYJ-FM 88.7 MHz Ft. Myers.

Interesting, that's quite a haul to receive the Joy FM 88.1 Bradenton (with tower near Venice, FL);assuming you're in Illinois.

I've heard that Honda's have good stock radios.

I was wondering if people in Texas were receiving stations from the Tampa Bay/Sarasota area, but I guess E-skip doesn't necessarily work that way.

In south FL, it was a wild e-skip day! My Kia Soul's car radio refused to shut up the distant signals, even as I parked the car for work. Mostly TX, but AL, OK, LA & Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Also got my 3rd catch at home of KCWX digital ch 5 today. I think, if I stayed home, I coulda had WMC DT5 Memphis....many FM stations not too far away from it.

I was checking the DX Sherlock map many times throughout the day and didn't see anything that would suggest E Skip could be happening here.

Haven't seen any thing since early June. Lately, the E clouds with the MUF at or above FM have been too far out of range for skip here. I guess it's happening during the times I don't check.

Exactly what time was it?

Sometimes the DX Sherlock maps don't get really short band openings. On the 11th I had all the way up to around 106 mhz for a few minutes, but I only saw MUF clouds in the 90s.

There have been ES openings to Florida several times from my location, the best ones were on June 5th and July 1st where the MUF covered the whole band. On June 29th and July 3rd I had smaller openings both to Florida where the MUF was around 96.

I was receiving Tampa Bay FM stations in Midland, Michigan on the morning of 7/12. Some of the signals were nearly wiping out the local signals.
It was actually quite a treat as I'm from the Tampa Bay area. I was able to hear WQYK, Q-105, WFLZ and others on my car radio during the 6AM and 7AM hours.

In Brownsville, TX yesterday, Orlando stations WWKA, WHTQ, WLOQ, and WOMX were received. The skip moved north and 93.7 out of Macon, 94.9 out of Roanoke and WKRR out of Ashebor, NC were also logged.

As a side note, 870 WWL came in fairly well in Brownsville; so they literally can be heard along the entire Gulf Coast by day (assuming they can be heard in the Keys).

Firsthand I can say that in the Keys, 870 WWL takes some work. It is much more audible (using the right equipment) on the mainland facing the Gulf, and I'd say from Naples FL north, a decent car radio will snag it.

WWL has an almost local like strength right out on the beach here in central Florida.

This is my catch from Belleair Beach where there's little interference from the local on 860.

Good e-skip today also. While driving in Sarasota, I picked up stations such as 93.5 WHMI Howell, MI, 95.3 KOKX Keokuk, IA (St. Louis Cardinals game), 95.5 WFUN St. Louis and 95.5 KWNR Las Vegas.

Filed under "one of these things is not like the others", KWNR Las Vegas?!? From Sarasota, FL? That's one heck of a catch! It must have taken a double hop for that one to get to you.

Around 1 pm today, I did one of my routine checks for E Skip using the real time map and nothing of a high enough frequency was indicated for Es to Tampa and then I remembered the advice of someone here who said FM Es can still sometimes be happening even if those high frequencies are not indicated on the map.

I scanned the dial and for a brief time I heard some rapid fading in and out on some frequencies but not too strong. On one frequency, they started to give an ID that started with a KS and then it quickly went too weak to hear.

On 96.7, I heard Rush Limbaugh fade in and out for a bit but got no station ID.

I'm wondering where that station was from.

I think that twice in the last 2 weeks or so from south FL, I caught WBAP-FM (//AM 820) serving Dallas/Ft. Worth. Coulda been them, as they carry Rush. Found that out Googlin'.
