Earthquake near San Jose

The 1994 SoCal quake (aka the Northridge quake) had events that could be considered foreshocks in Santa Monica and Barstow in the days leading up to it, but none of them exceeded magnitude 3.6, so no one probably noticed.

That's kind of an ordinary week in SoCal. There were 9 quakes between magnitude 2.5 and 3.8 registered by USGS in California between March 1 and 7 of this year. There's some debate about how one might quantify foreshocks.

Does that mean it's never happened, or can't happen?
Rather rare. Even the experts are saying that the series of disastrous quakes in Turkey were separate incidents, perhaps nudged by each other, but far enough apart to be considered unrelated.
