EDITS OF CALIF. GURLS & NOTHIN' ON YOU

The "non Snoop Dogg" version of CG is just plain stale. Snoop helped make it #1 for 6 weeks, it's not fair that just because he's a rapper they have to cut out EVERY WORD he says. Katy Perry chose him to be on it- not to NOT be on it just because HAC & wimpy CHR stations are afraid to have him on there. I believe HAC stations cater to 20-somethings to 40-somethings. 40-somethings were 80's teenagers & I'm sure aren't going to gasp & tune out when they hear him. "I Want You" by Thalia & Fat Joe was another classic example- same w/ "I'm Real" by J-Lo & Ja-Rule.
Rant #2: I noticed on a couple HAC stations & even on-line on WTWR (Tower 98), Monroe, Mi that they were playing this version of "Nothin' On You" (B.O.B & BM) where they literally chop off about the last :40 of the song. After being used to hearing "And that's just how we do it...(laugh)...and I'm gonna let this ride...B.O.B...Bruno Marrs..." getting chopped before any of that big catchy ending kicks in. They could have at least waited 'til right after "And that's just how we do it". It sounds like total crap, especially for those of us who heard the regular version over & over for the last 4 months & AC stations are now jumping on it after all this time. I'd rather them not play it at all.

I prefer that version of B.O.B. & Bruno Mars, but I've only heard how Clear Channel stations play it. I run multiple Internet Radio stations and I don't even have that version. I'm sure I could search and get it, but it's not worth it when the other radio edit is the same song.

You could make your own- just chop off the last :41 of the song without even bothering to put a fade on it. ::)

Cutting out rap or sections of certain songs for AC or Hot AC is nothing new!

Doesn't anyone remember the days of Outhere Brothers "boom boom boom" and La Bouche "Sweet dreams"?
Doesn't anyone remember the days of Fun Factory "I wanna B with U"?

This was the 90's by the way, just in case I'm losing people.. and the rap was cut out of those songs on certain stations as well.

I do have two questions though:
1. Is Will Smith Hot AC material? And
2. If so, what do they do with his songs?

I know I should know this, but never really payed enough attention to find out for myself. Actually, never really thought of it until recently!

And lastly, does anyone still play the rapless version of "C'mon & Ride it (the train)" by Quad City Dj's?

I feel a new thread coming on!!!
A Hot AC I worked at played the theme from "Men In Black" for a short time and on summer feature weekends they'd play "Summertime" & at Halloween "A Nightmare on My Street".
The 1st rapless version I recall was when I first started in radio when Paula Abdul's "Opposites Attract" came out & we weren't allowed to play the M.C Scat Cat version.

Who cares if they edit a snippet of a rap part in a song? Snoop's rap in Katy Perry's song is weak. Nothing like the days of Doggystyle and The Chronic. Same thing with Ludacris appearing on the Justin Bieber song. Really???

Some songs actually sound better without the rap segment. For example; "Right beside you" by Sophia B Hawkins.

I am being 100% serious, too. No joke.

What's interesting is that some of the songs I mentioned above had rap cut out so the end result would be LESS rap. In other words, there was still rap, but less of it. Not exactly sure why they did this... I noticed that the rap was never cut out of Real McCoy's hits (well, except for on WSTR where they cut out half of "runaway"). Montell Jordan's "this is how we do it" sounded fine without the rap, but I preferred TLC's "waterfalls" with the rap in it. The same with Sugar Ray's "I just wanna fly".

To the original poster, I disagree on a couple points.

1. The presence of Snoop Dogg is NOT what made California Gurls a #1 record. While it was - and still is - "cool," having him on the song is not the strong point to the song. It became a #1 record because it is a decent, pure "bubble gum" pop song from a core artist that every CHR in America, even in highly conservative markets, can play around the clock and not have to worry about losing any segment of their audience because of content. My station, in fact, did not play the Snoop version before 7PM for the first 300 spins on the radio station. We are playing it now, but to say that Snoop is what made the song a #1 record is laughable.

2. The average listener could care less about that junk at the end of "Nothin' On You." The radio edit, in fact, cuts that out for us. The version that most CC stations are playing is the "Clean Album Version," not the "Radio Edit." In today's world of Pandora, Slacker, iHeartRadio, etc, we are best-served to get in and get out, when it comes to records like that. If it isn't vital to the song - and believe me, a 27-year-old female doesn't care about some rapper shouting out himself or his crew at the end of a song - then there is no reason for it to be on the air. The same argument could be made, in theory, about extended intro versions of :00 records, but that is a different thread altogether.

Ok now I'm really curious to find out what's happening at the end of this song that I've not been paying attention to... And I can agree with the shout out thing because i didn't care about the shout outs on "we fly high" either.

Now, question: Does anyone have the rapless version of Akon's "Beautiful" featuring Akon by himself at 320 KBPS or WAV? I like that version, too, even though the instrumental production is a little different. KZON used to play that version before they finally got a decent sized version with the rap in it. Oddly enough, KVIB was playing that version around the same time, too. Not sure why a latin rhythmic that plays Kardinal Official would play that version of "beautiful" by Akon. Our Rhythmic AC and KKFR played the regular radio edit with rap, but cut shorter.

I've heard KHOP 95.1 in Modesto, A Hot AC/CHR Hybrid cut out "gonna tie her to the bed and light this house on fire" out, it goes right from the bleep to Rihanna.

Just the other day here in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I heard the non-Snoop version of this song on 105.3 WHTS. I don't understand why they played this version because 105.3 is an Adult Hits (hybrid of Hot AC and CHR) station.

Here in Indy, they dont edit the rap on either of our contemperary stations, both stations are rhythmic dance leaning, and the I stations are the only cumulous chrs that dont lean adult.

This is going back awhile ago (perhaps 97 or so), but I remember both KTU & BLI playing Outhere Brothers "Boom Boom Boom", KTU would cut a portion of the hip hop, while BLI would leave it in. I always found that a bit odd, since KTU was more of the truer rhythmic CHR. BLI has always been rhythmic leaning, and played quite a bit of dance at the time, but still was a mainstream CHR, but they played the whole song while KTU did not.

Also with Shaggy's "Wasn't Me" KTU (which played the song the other day) always played "Love on the Bathroom floor" instead of "banging on the bathroom floor", don't remember which version Z100 played, but BLI, Party & K104 in Poughkeepsie all played the "banging" version. Never really understood why they didn't play the normal version "love on the bathroom floor" always sounded very strange.

The HOTAC format has been evolving the last couple years to include a lot more CHR songs. I guess they figure they need it to stay competitive. You would of never heard songs like these on HOTAC several years ago. The NON SNOOP version is mainly for stations who for whatever reason, do not want rap on thier stations. Here in DC, Mix107.3 airs it, allthough for the life of me I can't figure out why it is in MONO!! I heard it in Cincinnati on Q102 which is a CHR that leans HotAC, while the other Cinti CHR Kiss fm plays the Snoop version.

I've also heard another version of the song, I think on HOT100.5 in Va. Beach, where the beginning of the song does NOT include Snoop, but Snoop is present for his rapping solo at the bridge. This station is kind of dance leaning CHR.

I suspect Star 94 Atlanta is spinning the non snoop version, maybe even Q100 too as Atlanta has always been 'conservative'.

I of course prefer the non snoop version
