El Varón de la Salsa singer and musician, Willie Colón (1950-2026)

Should X96.3 do a tribute to the late great varón of Willie Colón on Los Coco Clásicos del Domingo en Salsa con Coco with all songs very importantly for now.

I contracted Willie to provide the band for "El Concierto Mayor" in 1979 in San Juan. That show was in honor of El Sonero Mayor, and had the 6 best soneros along with Ismael Rivera, the honoree. Willie did a beautiful job with the big hits of each of the singers.

One of Willie's earlier albums had an inside joke on the cover: Willie was dressed as a boxer and was in the ring at Gleason's gymnasium in NYC... and a big "Gleason" sign is seen in the background. That was a little play on my own last name by Willie and Jerry Masucci of Fania.

And Willie's albums with Ruben Blades were sensational... "Pedro Navaja" and "Plantación Adentro" and many other huge hits.

The PBS series "Latin Music USA" brought Willie Colon to my attention, along with Hector Lavoe, though I heard "La Murga de Panama" years earlier on the radio. Borrowing from Arhoolie Records Chris Strachwitz line, this ain't mouse music.
