El Zol morning show change and ratings discussion

So sharing this facebook video. As you know, the morning show from WODA in San Juan recently got replace by Nandy and Kristy from WYUU. Rocky the Kid acknowledges that their presence in Tampa Bay was an afterthought, since SBS wanted an Orlando station, but had to buy it with the Tampa one, and so they used WODA/WPYO's morning show as a placeholder until they could score an established morning show in the market, which they eventually did. Their intention was always to concentrate on Puerto Rico and Orlando (where the Puerto Rican population is big).

However, it just so happens (or so Rocky claims) that their show was #1 in the ratings before it left Tampa. This contrasts with usual talk in these forums, which is that the Central Florida SBS stations struggle heavily in the rating.

Keep in mind I'm not sharing this to dunk on anybody. Just an observation.

I find it interesting that WSUN's morning show of all stations would be #1 in Tampa-St Petersburg. Are we sure SBS isn't fiddling around with the numbers again?

I'm surprised WSUN has lasted this long in the Spanish Tropical/CHR format when the only thing it's really been useful for is being a Tampa Bay promotional tool for the SBS Orlando concerts. If SBS wants to be more successful ratings-wise in Tampa, I believe they should go for an older demographic like the one WTIS is covering.

The Rocky & Burbu Morning Show was #1 in Tampa Bay "among Spanish language stations" for one rating period according to a post by Fernando Baeurmeister in Facebook. I also feel the station would do better if it would target a slightly older demographic, more like WCMQ-FM in Miami, although the Alex Sensation show seems to be a good fit as it has a very diverse playlist.

Any show/station can extrapolate what it can from the ratings. If you're leading with men 32-37 who have green mohawks then you're "#1". It's marketing spin.

But that said, the 6+ that we all get to see tells very little of the story other than if a station is doing well across multiple demos. I've seen stations below a 2 share 6+ that are leading in their target demos and that's all that matters to them as its what they are selling off of.

Technically, what should matter to SBS is Spanish-language buys as those stations operate in their own ecosystem separate from English-language ones, hence why iHeart can have stations in places like Philadelphia or Boston. But they have bragged about beating all the English-language stations in Orlando the first week on air.
