EMF scores a big one in Mobile - 97.5 WABB to KLove March 1st.

This will cover both Mobile and Pensecola. K-Love has a station in Pensecola that will duplicate the station in Mobile that only covers Pensecola. Like so many markets in the country, K-Love duplicates themselves. And like Jackson, MS and New Orleans, there are stations that do CCM locally.

Will be intersting to see what "Power 88" does in Mobile ... They run some day part local and outside of that I think use Salem's Today's Christian Music format. (At least they did when I was last in the area)

It would be good if EMF cold change some of their stations to Air 1 in the area. They've started doing that in NW TN when there got to be a lot of overlap betewwn Dyersburg and Union City. Actually considering the past format of WABB this looks like it would be a good candidate to be an Air 1 station.

Hey, RDP, is there any chance you can get this in Selma?

Now for my response to this move.

I'm mixed on this one.  That's right everyone.  It's true that Mobile has a need for Christian based programming on the radio but if you do too much of one thing, it will lead to an overkill.  Hope EMF will do the Air-1 thing and not try to copycat WBHY and/or the other established CCM players in that area.  This station needs to set itself apart and do something that no one else in the market is already doing.  Maybe if this station went the rock route and did Air-1, it would ultimately lead to real success for them.  Copying the other CCM players would be a real waste of this newly acquired signal.

That's my two cents on this.

They I am sure will be going KLove.. EMF does not have another full market signal there to allow this one to do Air1.

If WBHY was smart they would go 'local' 24/7 (Last I heard when I was in Pensacola/Mobile they ran Salem's "Todays Christian Music" outside of Morning/drive times).. If I was WBHY I would drop the Salem format, go to local automation with a CHR/Hot AC type format (lean towards something like Air1) and push the community aspect hard.. That's something KLove can not do without local personalities.

I love what you said. Get away from the Salem format. My opinion is to get a few local announcers, automation on some if needed, go with a Hot AC/CHR format, and differentiate the station from other Christian music stations in the area, especially if KLOVE comes in with their programming and not Air 1. Can still differentiate from Air 1 in many ways too, and bring something other than Christian AC, which is what KLOVE plays.

Don't get me wrong, I think what EMF is doing is wonderful, but gobbling up stations in the process may not always be good, and the programming may be not to everybody's taste in a local market. I am an earnest believer that local programming is best, whether there are specific crews for the day-parts, whether the day-parts are local or automated, or whether the station is voice tracked for the area. I earnestly believe a local presence is best though.

I agree that local is best if it's actually done locally and in the right way but when most of it is automated or by satellite is it really any better? I'd rather have K-LOVE or Air 1 than Salem.

When a local station gets most or all of its programming from a satellite network that just says they're taking the cheap way out and it's just asking for someone like EMF to move in.

Which is why I say that WBHY should go local soon.. like now -- ditch the TCM satellite Format and run a hot AC style Christian format locally -- something like WayFM Nashville. They do local drive shows so they already have the music library -- just start programming it outside of drive times! (even if they have a voice tracker overnights or during even mid days -- at least they would be mentioning local events)

WABB is a flame thrower and a big gain for EMF. Plus it's the first station for EMF in the state of AL.

I suspect we'll see 95.7 WKFP flip to Air1.

My guess is if WBHY loses its listeners to K-Love, it would get sold to EMF. The overlapping coverage areas of WBHY-FM and WKFP near the Alabama/Florida state line would not be excessive. WQUA/Citronelle doesn't cover enough of Mobile, and WDLT/Mobile doesn't need to upgrade. I don't think WZEW/Fairhope is going anywhere (not that it hasn't happened before), and EMF might want to avoid messing with another historic radio station in Mobile.
