End of an era - KOY to change formats Monday

KOY has been slowly evolving over the years, but starting Monday (August 19, 2013) the station switches to a "financial" format. Just what we need in the market!

My /sources/ tell me this occurs tomorrow (Monday). Makes sense given the fact that Danny Davis was shown the door recently, although that's just part of the blood-letting going on over at Clear Channel these days.

Currently hearing Bloomberg Radio on their stream. Wonder if smooth jazz is also gone?

The website is currently news stories & stock quotes, but the music headers haven't been changed yet. So we have the dirty 1230 taking on KFNN. What time will Purity Products air? ;)

And now the website reads Business 1230 KFYI.

Friggin' Clear Channel.

Does this mean 92.3 can *finally* go Ramsey-free get back to "live and local" after 7pm because, of course, "live and local all day," "live and local all day," that's how KTAR rolls? ONE station for financial, ONE station for sports, and ONE station for the news/talk soapbox/lecture - keep things simple and give the cross-format hodgepodge a rest already.

If I were a betting man, I would wager that Bloomberg Radio is intended as filler between paid programming.

Another nail in the coffin for AM radio.

I find it funny they're using the KFYI branding and airing Bloomberg Radio. Wouldn't the Bloomberg name be considered "socialist" to KFYI brand loyaltees? ;D

This could accelerate a the move of sports to FM sooner than later. If the historic KOY calls aren't immune, then certainly the heritage KDKB calls aren't either.

And, ironically, one of the links on that page celebrates 90 years of KOY. Go figure. ::)

But in any case, why would CC brand both 550 and 1230 as KFYI? Am I correct in ass-u-me-ing that the official callsign for 1230 will remain KOY?

Guess this leaves Lumberyard 14~Forty the last English language music Ancient Modulation station in the Valley.

KOY + KFYI = KOFYI. Coffee 12~Thirty. YIKES!!

Not sure I get this move. The format was the 3rd highest rated am in the market, yes they had a whopping 1.2 but that's got to be better than falling completely off the ratings radar like the rest of the am's in the market. Having 75 year olds listening has to be better than no one listening.

While there may be a market for financial news, there is none for 65+ on a station that does not cover the area's more famous retirement conclaves.

*AHEM* As the apparent sole listener of the former KOY I would like to state that, although I may be well passed the standard advertiser demo age, I am not yet 75 (or close to it).

Now.....GET OFF MY GRASS! (and give me back my radio station).

I didn't think anything of Danny Davis not being in the air last week. I figured he was on vacation. Such a shame.

Even though I'm not a senior citizen, KOY was the only station I listened to regularly. I can listen to it at work without offending anybody. On the weekends, I liked listening during the wee hours of the morning, watching the sunrise with a cup of coffee before the infomercials came on. Last holiday season, KOY played Christmas music for the whole month of December; hearing it in AM was more meaningful to me. They played "Santa's Got A Brand New Bag" by the Hollyridge Strings, which was played during the Holiday Special bumpers during the 70s and 80s on WPIX, New York. Just a tremendous, sentimental memory for me. And KOY always thanked you for listening.

RIP KOY. Thanks for the memories.

Correct. I spend a lot of time in northeast Mesa, and will be moving out there in January. Most of the Phoenix AM stations are noisy in that part of the valley, even in my car. KOY is almost inaudible at night and so-so during the day. Even KTAR Arizona Sports 620 has problems in parts of Mesa, especially east of Gilbert Rd.

I didn't read the other thread about Davis until after I posted. That actually makes a bad situation worse as Danny Davis was a class act and I enjoyed his morning show (which always ended with the Arizona 'State Song') & the Friday afternoon Sock Hop.

Back to sulking... :(

While 1230 is non-directional, all the surrounding slop makes the pattern look like a pair of lips. (No, that wasn't why Gary Brobst named the Urban format Kiss...)

Sun City actually doesn't do too badly (or it didn't back in the mid 90's), but the east valley has always had issues with that signal - even dating back to the days of KRIZ Balls.

KRIZ came in like gangbusters at my grandparents' house in the original part of Sun City (near 107th Ave & Grand, where the railroad sign still said "Marinette") in the '60s, even at 250 watts nighttime power.

But most of east Mesa didn't even exist back then, except the soon-to-be-crack-houses snowbird motels along Main St./Apache Trail and the Dreamland Villa area. There wasn't much of an audience for KRIZ in that part of the valley, except for visiting grandchildren, any more than there was in Sun City.

And I'd be willing to bet they can make more money selling blocks of airtime to local "financial experts" who want their own hour long shows...or just blatantly infomercials...than they could selling spots based on whatever demos they may have been getting with that 1.2.

Business news may be the one format with a higher "power ratio" than Sports. They can make some serious money, even with a 0.0 share (those few affluent business executives who listen but don't have PPM's DO have serious amounts of disposable income to spend).
