End of an era - KOY to change formats Monday

Eric Stein said:
Business news may be the one format with a higher "power ratio" than Sports. They can make some serious money, even with a 0.0 share (those few affluent business executives who listen but don't have PPM's DO have serious amounts of disposable income to spend).

But can they beat KFNN at their own game? 1510 has had a 20-year head start, is more local, and has a much better daytime signal.

But would an "affluent business executive" be listening to an AM station? As opposed to the myriad of other ways to access the same programs and info?

I didn't think anything of Danny Davis not being in the air last week. I figured he was on vacation. Such a shame.

Even though I'm not a senior citizen, KOY was the only station I listened to regularly. I can listen to it at work without offending anybody. On the weekends, I liked listening during the wee hours of the morning, watching the sunrise with a cup of coffee before the infomercials came on. Last holiday season, KOY played Christmas music for the whole month of December; hearing it in AM was more meaningful to me. They played "Santa's Got A Brand New Bag" by the Hollyridge Strings, which was played during the Holiday Special bumpers during the 70s and 80s on WPIX, New York. Just a tremendous, sentimental memory for me. And KOY always thanked you for listening.

RIP KOY. Thanks for the memories.

Remember we're talking about the company that took KOY's former sister station - which had a long standing unique format position - and blew it up to launch a more vanilla, more voice tracked, and more boring version of Mega. They're not trying to "beat" anyone at a "game." They're trying to operate their properties at the absolute lowest cost/highest cash flow possible. I'm going to take a wild guess here and say that KFNN's ratings and signal are the last things that the bean counters at CCM+E-I-E-I-O factored into their calculations.

Even when they're winning, they try to cut costs. It may have escaped everyone's notice, but the fact that KNIX has been handing KMLE their lunch on a regular basis for the last few years wasn't enough to save the jobs of their APD and afternoon guy. It is pretty messed up when you can win consistently and still lose your gig.

At the risk of having our fezzes handed to us on a silver platter, Nurse Jeff and I think this was a smart move. Smart because virtually no one under the age of 65 listens to music on Ancient Modulation. Smart because a Business format doesn't need ratings to make money (just look at KFuNN). And even smarter to call it KFWhyEye Bidniss and use 5~Fifty to attract listeners to the station and its web site. Last time we checked, KFWhyEye has the largest audience on Ancient Modulation..and they aint playing music! It's conservative talk. And by counting the number of gold hawkers and financial planners who advertise, there's a lot of audience to share with 12~Thirty. Ka-ching. If you think about it, KOY really died when KGME was moved from 13~Sixty to 5~Fifty, and that was 14 years ago. Since then it's been rewarmed nostalgia for what the station used to be.

Agreed. If "affluent" then he/she would listen to CNBC or Bloomberg Radio on XM.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

No PPM needed.

And I'd be willing to bet they can make more money selling blocks of airtime to local "financial experts" who want their own hour long shows...or just blatantly infomercials...than they could selling spots based on whatever demos they may have been getting with that 1.2.

There are certainly enough big headed blow hard financial guys who would love to hear themselves talk for an hour at a time then brag to all their buddies and some bimbo at the bar, that this may acutally work. Plus they certainly know where to find money to pay for the air time. Look for gaudy Maserati's with vanity plates the likes of DWJNZ parked in front of CC Phoenix soon.

One problem may be they'll have to run their own board because there is no one left in that building.

Was that more or less than the number of people that listened to News FM 101.9? (I forgot the calls already)

Some of those brokered shows are de facto podcasts, which would make the only remaining problem finding cleared bumpers unless the station will kick in the 6-cents, or whatever the going rate is these days. However, on that point, I don't know why someone would pay for one line of one song to be re-recorded (original song being "What I Like About You" by The Romantics) when I don't think the licensing fee wouldn't have been that expensive for the whole darn song. Sorry to digress.

KOY made the Andrea Hiland's Questions Answered column in the Arizona Republic. A reader (not Aunt Edna) wanted to know what happened to the Easy Listening format. Hiland responded with KFYI's press release.

Once again, in-depth coverage at The McRepublic amounts to passing along a press release. The fact it took 200 EVB 2+ weeks to report the death of KOY speaks volumes. hmmmm...bet Danny Davis could have made some comments if only he was asked.

So KOY becomes KayFWhyeyeBiz? Koy is history, a defacto call letter change without a call letter change? Is that legal? It is confusing, but legal?

On a related note: KJZZ covered KOY this past Sunday during the local segment of the NPR. I don't regularly listen to KJZZ except for NPR, so I don't know if they were late to the party like Gannett.
