End of local talk radio?

Crap Channel also known as the Evil Empire will do anything to take out the independent station. In Tampa, WFLA was in a serious battle with WWBA. Mark Larsen, Boortz, O'Reilly, Hannity, Savage with heavy local news (also former CC employees) started taking chunks of audience from CC. They got Hannity to move by offering a delayed night release, with a delayed Levin release. I'm sure it was an offer ABC could not refuse because CC would have cancelled Hannity or added Hannity in a bunch of markets. ABC chose the latter. WWBA's audience tanked because Hannity was the most listened to talker on the station. They replaced it with a local, so we will see if that works out. CC has done the same thing in other markets to independents who take the risk of taking talkers before they become stars. It is CC's minor league. Bully corporate monopolistic practices. The FTC should look into this. No CC employee or network exec will come forward because they are afraid of the CC gestapo. CC has the big tower sticks and the big stick.

Indeed, CC had the money and power to purchase the two most powerful AM talk radio signals in Tampa.
The nearest local competitor is only 4kw compared to the powerhouse CC stations.
1250 AM, also owned by CC, and totally syndicated and brokered, doesn't show in ratings. I think 1250 AM is 5kw.

Rated stations Station Power

Day/Night (1,000 Watts)
Ownership Format
WFLA 25/11 Clear Channel News-talk
WDAE 11/11 Clear Channel Sports
WGUL 05/1,5 Salem News-talk (totally syndicated)
WTBN 05/05 Salem Religious
WWBA 04/0.4 Genesis News-talk

Really Sorry Don, confusing you and Al.

The degree has little effect on what was said by him.

When did WWBA - with Hannity - ever get higher than a two share - at least a half, often a third of WFLA's numbers. Please substantiate your claim of a "serious battle."

One of the reasons the owners of 860-WGUL, a heritage 5kw standards and oldies station, sold their operation to Salem, was that independent operators such as themselves couldn't offer the spot buying discounts that the CC's of the world were offering customers. The Wal Mart CC business model thus put another local voice out of business.

If indeed a published report exists, could it be the sour grape opinion of an operator who couldn't make it and not necessarily a fact? And Don, as has been pointed out before, CC operates a whole bunch of news/talk stations with multiple local shows. We all get it and agree with you about the preference for more local shows, but your premise that it's some sort of evil corporate mandate doesn't add up.

Not so in some markets,WCCO KSTP in twin cities a major exception. WCCO 24/7 live and local,KSTP 5am-12mid live and local. KGO in San Fran 24/7 live and local , KMOX ST.Louis live and local except for 3 hours of Rush. WGN live and local 24/7 . Not too sure about KOA Denver. Are there any others?
