ESPN, ABC and other Disney channels dropped from DirecTV in contract dispute

Radio-Television Business Report (commonly referred to in the industry as RBR-TVBR) reports that there has indeed been legal action taken ... just not what Don thought it would be:

To quote the e-mail I got summarizing (essentially, the first three paragraphs of the longer linked article):

It was only a matter of time. DirecTV, which has been on a media blitz since it failed to secure a fresh carriage agreement with The Walt Disney Co. prior to the September 1 expiry deadline, has submitted a "Good Faith Negotiation Complaint" with the FCC.

The move came on Saturday, a day full of exciting NCAA collegiate football games, and ahead of Monday Night Football's season opener on September 9. The matchup, which sees the New York Jets visit the San Francisco 49ers, will not be accessible to any DirecTV subscriber.

But, that's just the tip of a large iceberg that could arguably sink DirecTV, or torpedo retrans negotiations as we've known them.

What does Aaron Rodgers have to do with any of this?

Since Aaron Rodgers Jets is on MNF like last year and it was a joke since Aaron did a darkness retreat after the NFL season was over before he was traded to the Jets. Since Charter Spectrum got a deal just in time for his debut as a Jet got injured 4 plays into the season last season hope he doesn't get injured. That is why I made the joke should've put LOL and was scream as well.

Why do these disputes only happen between one cable company and a broadcaster? If the broadcaster is charging everyone exuberant fees, shouldn't all of them either pay a lot more, or disconnect them? (Sling is still able to carry them, and not charge much.)

I remember in the fall of 93 Pay-TV OTA networks had to get deals done or they go dark for the most part very few went dark on Pay-TV in West Michigan Cablevision & Wood TV took until Jan 94 to get a deal done just in time for SB28 Suckyision did that dance with Wood TV's owner LIN now Nexstar Suckyision found a loop-pole in a deal in 96 as it went dark again for a couple of weeks and returned Wood just said they didn't reach a deal they had SB30, and in 97 was dark for a whole year when I had Suckyvision at my new house and could only watch Wood TV on rabbit ears with an AV-switch. In 93 I had Adelphia Comm around 6AM they reached a deal with Wood TV I checked to make sure I had the locals when I got up even know my mom said they were still on WNDU was blocked out and was returned when the Wood TV deal was reached.

I think after that networks & Pay-TV made it so that not everyone is blacked out at the same time that is how they got the hundreds of channels because of the 93 deal-making that happened at the time.

From reading the linked article, I conclude that such agreements with the affiliates means their carriage on streaming platforms are controlled by the negotiations made by the network, so yes, such a blackout is total. The network affiliates are treated as if they were O&Os.

This whole mess makes me very thankful for OTA. I am not dependent on DirecTV or Spectrum to watch KABC-TV.
Not to digress, but people who can get OTA signals don't know how good they have it. I live in Azusa North of 210 in the canyon and there is zero OTA signals here. So many times I see posts about disputes and people casually say "just use an antenna". Aw, if it only were that easy. Second option is move, which is less and less likely now with crazy housing market.

When I go to a place with signal, it's like a candy store to me scanned and checking what subchannels people can get with an antenna

Ha ha ha

But you have a killer house! I subscribed to IVI & Locast. IVI brought me local TV from New York, Chicago, L.A. & Seattle for $5 a month. I got 5 ME TV's as Chicago had two. Locast brought all the OTA and sub channels from Los Angeles and it was $5 a month. Both services were shut down after a year or so. I live in an area with no TV, no Newspaper, no Radio, no Food, and now no Pharmacy

Or those subscribers can just switch to a streaming tv service.... why exactly do they need direc tv?
Because there are some folk like me who don't want to stream TV. I like DirecTV so I pay for it. It's that simple.

I agree. I've been a DirecTV customer since 1996, dumping them about a year ago. Now between YouTube-TV and Amazon's Freevee, I have more relevant channels to watch at half the monthly rate. And unlike DirecTV, I don't get all the useless shopping channels, including the My Pillow Channel, or the Scientology Channel. It used to piss me off that I'd have to pay for so much crap that I never watched. That, and they would sneak these little rate increases into my bill every few months. I'd have to call them up and complain loudly enough, they'd remove the charge, then try to sneak it back in sixty days later.
Bastards! I'm so glad to be rid of them.

Here is an updated message from Directv.

i predict by the end of the month, we get a new DirecTV/U-Verse slate saying "We and Disney have agree not to agree on a new deal, we have decided to file a anti-trust lawsuit with Disney to take them to court, and we will have other providers join us in a class action lawsuit too against Disney and other greedy media companies, and thus all Disney owned networks are premamently gone from our lineup, we are sorry about this, Disney left us with no choice".

i think these paid TV providers need to file anti-trust lawsuits against the big media companies to call them out on their greedy practices of renegotation for retransmisson of their networks.

Rural California, about a block from Arizona. Or as Kim Wilde called it, "East California"
Needles fits that well!
