Although I started this thread, I, too, am ready to
see it shut down.
My point in starting the thread was this: during Dr.
Dean Richardson's news conference last Thursday,
he was asked when Barbaro might have to be euthanised.
He said it "could be" within 24 hours, or it could be at
some other time, depending on whether Barbaro suffers
a setback that can't be treated.
ESPN last Thursday night predicted that Barbaro would
indeed be put down sometime Friday.
As we know, it didn't happen. This wonder animal is
hanging in there.
Whether horse racing is cruelty to animals is strictly
a matter of opinion, and I won't question anyone's
opinion stated here. I do know that Thoroughbreds
are bred to run. Barbaro is fortunate to have methods
of treatment that weren't available to, say, Ruffian
thirty years ago.
I can't agree that he's "just a horse," as evidenced
by the literally thousands of get-well wishes coming
into the New Bolton Center.
All I'm saying is for ESPN--or any media source--to
report the facts, avoid speculation, and let the fates
take their course. If he makes it, he's scored a bigger
victory than the Triple Crown; if he doesn't, he put up
one heck of a battle.
