ESPN ON ABC:COLLEGE FOOTBALL: BIG 12 BLOWOUT VS PAC 10 THRILLER

Theres an age-old arguement that when it comes to College Football, the East Coast fans and reporters have an anti West Coast Bias.

For years those in and out of ESPN have denied it. Well, beat the drums for that line of thinking, for as Texas was hand delivering their annual whooping of Kansas, Oregon and Arizona were having one of the best games of the year.

The UT-KU "scrimmage" such as it was, was decided by half time. Those of us in the South had to put up with this crap, while the West Coast and parts of the East were given the OU-UA game..however, as with the 3:30 Eastern games, the OU-UA game was not available on your ESPN Family of NEtworks, but it was available on ESPN360.com...as I'm watching as I'm typing.

My local ABC station has gone to local news. ESPNU is showing Nevada-New Mexico State, a game that was pretty much decided when Nevada first touched the ball. ESPNNews and ESPN are wondering when Notre Dame is going to wish Charlie Weis well in his future endeavours.

Meanwhile, Oregon has just scored in overtime...as thousands of Arizona student fans abandoned the stands and are standing on the sidelines thinking they were going to rush the field.....Oregon scored just before time expired....and much of the country missed it because
ABC gave us the "Ford Wrap Up", something whipped together to escort the viewer into local programming, the same way a waiter strongly advises you to leave because you been here too long.

To the defense of ABC/ESPN, they can't plan which games to carry based on the results, because obviously they are unknown prior. That having been said, the OR-AZ game was the best of the day, and it was shown in my market. Also, they had their #1 broadcast team, Musburger/Herbstreit on it. So I imagine it was the major game shown on ABC tonight, with regionals in some areas. I actually like ABC's regional coverage...a major game for most markets, and regionals for local interest. BTW, Musburger is still one of the best college football announcers IMO, now age 70, with his knowledge and ability to get excited at the right times. (Not every play needs excitement)...

Some internet providers (like AT&T and Comcast) offer their subscribers access to ESPN360. I have used the site extensively to watch games not being shown in my area or to avoid having to watch the game being shown in my area. :)

My points were : 1)With the exception of the Big12 Markets (Texas and the Midwest), no one needed to see the rest of that slaughter, and 2) Once the Texas game was finally over, why didnt ABC take the rest of the country to the conclusion of the UA-OU game? The outcome had a direct impact on the Pac-10 representative for the Rose Bowl, which ABC will be showing to 100 percent of the country.

They dropped the ball....

Studio20 is right.

I, too, wanted to watch the Oregon/Arizona game but got the other instead.

In many markets, the ABC stations and affiliates have sub-channels. Why can't the other be carried on the sub-channel? I would have settled for watching Oregon/Arizona on my local affiliate's sub-channel (WZVN-DT2).

While on the subject of sub-channels...

In my area, the primary Raycom/ACC affiliate WZVN (the ABC affiliate) was unable to air the ACC Game of the Week (Maryland/Florida State) due to the Ohio State/Michigan game airing at noon. In most instances, they fall back on NBC affiliate WBBH to carry it; they were unable to because of the Notre Dame game airing at 2:30 pm. The other option was to farm it out to local CBS affiliate WINK, like they did on November 7th with the Virginia/Miami game; that was a no-go. Waterman Broadcasting, which owns WBBH and operates WZVN under a LMA, was left with one option: placing the game on WBBH-DT2, which goes by NBC 2 News Now and is also available on Comcast Digital.

Cox (at least in Phoenix - not sure about other markets) also recently gave their subscribers access to ESPN360.

Tampa Bay had a similar dilemma as the ABC station was told to go with Ohio State-Michigan over the Tampa based USF (University of South Florida...um, yeah ,we know..its nowhere near Miami, just roll with it)-Louisville because of our transplants/snowbirds from both Ohio and Michigan. OSU as predicted whipped Michigan, while the USF game was farmed out to BrightHouseSportsNetwork's sports channel..so unless you have their cable, you have zip. uSF again went out to a lead, promptly blew it, and rallied to beat what was left of the Cardinal club. (BTW), originally, TampasBrightHouseSportsNetwork was scheduled to air the UCF (University of Central Florida...which ..actually IS in Central Florida) vs someone called Tulane, live. That game, mercifully, was tape delayed.

And to make matters worse, the KSU-Nebraska game (Which I saw on ESPN) as well as the SEC game (Which I saw on ESPN2) were both MUCH better ballgames than the Kansas-Texas game. Makes one wonder why they didn't switch most of the country to either one of those games as well. Would've made sense. Dontcha think??

Just my opinion.....

Cheers :D

Bright House Sports Net in central Florida aired the UCF game live.

The only television market in Florida which airs the Big East Network Game of the Week is Tampa. The rest of us depend on out-of-market RSNs like SNY (Big East Network flagship), MASN and Altitude.

Sidenote: Tulane was a founding member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
