"ESPN Pensacola" shuts down: WBSR 1450/101.1 off air, new owner/format to come

"ESPN Pensacola" shuts down: WBSR 1450/101.1 off air, new owner/format to come

From the Pensacola News Journal at PNJ.com:
After nearly six years as Pensacola's sports-talk radio and ESPN radio affiliate, the station is off the air and is expected to soon be re-branded as a different program format under new ownership.

Dan Weaver, owner of the ESPN Pensacola station, informed employees Wednesday morning that he was ceasing operations immediately. The employees were not given advanced notice.

From that moment, the station has not been on the air. The employees were terminated. The station's website was still online, as well as its Facebook page with an updated photo from Tuesday of its main entrance.

Weaver declined to be interviewed or provide a statement, but confirmed the station was no longer in operation as ESPN Pensacola. Station General Manager Amber Hutchinson did not respond to an email sent Wednesday requesting explanation.

Have you been reading the ATL site, Poledo?

Hard to imagine the Ticket, if it's even still Hale's, outlasted another sports station. I wonder when half of Nashville's eighteen sports stations will finally collapse.

how many News-Talk stations can Pensacola support?

Is there any way this helps Fox Sports 1490 from Milton?

Stunting with all kinds of stunt music. I heard Blues and Techno this this afternoon.

Any clue who the new owner is? No one will knows or they are trying to keep a secret.

I've heard a rumor... if it's true, this will be cool.

Supposedly the new format debuts Wednesday.

Under the new AM>FM translator rules, would it be possible for Fox Sports WTKE 1490 in Milton to use a full power translator in Pensacola? Translator has to be within 25 miles of the AM tower now with no requirement of staying within the AMs coverage area, right?

The rumor or has been around for a while. I thought WVTJ, WNVY or WASG plus the 95.3 (or the rogue 97.1 translator) was the target. I never saw WBSR in the equation.
ADX still has that unused 94.5 translator... TBA.
WEBY will surely grab the next best frequency in the upcoming AM translator window.
Surely WTKE 1490 will grab some FM spectrum, in P'cola or Milton.
WCOA doesn't seem to give a fook.

Is it possible Pensacola is in for a few new 250 watt FM formats in the next year? We haven't had much local FM radio in the last 20 years. Thanks Mobile.

The LMA is over. and it is none of the above. and yes they will do well in P'cola.

I've got the new format, that's a poorly kept secret in Downtown Pensacola. I just can't figure out who's making the capital investment.

Reports say most all local programming from ESPN Pensacola is moving to 97.1 The Ticket. Not 100.3, only 97.1.
