ESPN Radio to lose MLB rights as part of ESPN-MLB split

ESPN Radio did a good job covering the playoffs and World Series. Imagine Westwood One would love to grab these rights:

I think what made it work for ESPN was having the 24/7 network to carry it. Westwood One doesn't have such a thing. Lately they've been spinning off some of their sports rights to Compass and other smaller syndicators. I think Fox Sports Radio is the only network that has the bulk to make it work.

But who knows, maybe ESPN could do a radio-only deal.

No because the TV networks don't own radio networks anymore. The NFL rights are split among many companies.
So why drop ESPN radio if they might not have a new buyer. If it’s a separate deal run it until the end of the term.

ESPN Radio might be able to retain the radio, since only Fox has a radio division. But the profit margin is much better for talk than pbp.

The other content is usually where they make money, not in PBP. Could they take over? Probably not. The playoffs take place during NFL season.
They have multiple feeds, networks that have baseball teams will broadcast the playoffs and games of the week. Baseball is still first and foremost a radio product.

NFL makes more money than MLB, and WW1 has already cut back on their NFL games. So I don't see them adding baseball.

ESPN and Fox have the infrastructure to support MLB. If neither of them do it, then the MLB will do it themselves.

They still need a distributor.
