ESPN Radio (WENJ) not carrying NASCAR this year?

And expense! I think the NFL costs less for rights. And the deal to carry Sprint Cup carries a must broadcast for the Nationwide AND Truck series! That's a lot of program time to surrender to one sport.

Wha? I don't think the Philly country station carries Nationwide/Truck races.

Unlike other sports, NASCAR is the one sport that doesn't translate well to radio. It's good if you're in a car and need to catch up on a race, but I couldn't imagine listening to an entire race on the radio.

Star...WENJ is not Market #6. I'm sure Beasley got concessions for major market exposure. Possibly airing the spots from the other races. But a 1450 is a typical Nascar carrier, small/medium market, and they twist the station's nipples to carry all or nothing. Which is why it just isn't all over the dial like other sports.

And before you other readers eloquently denounce NASCAR as a redneck pasttime, who says you need a stick or ball to make it a sport? Isn't gymnastics considered sports? Wrestling? Track? Swimming?

It's a lot more fun for a family or couple to attend a NASCAR event at Dover or Pocono than some NFL events. When you go to the stadium, the owners' hands are out for money everywhere you turn. At NASCAR, the track welcomes you with free pick-up and return shuttles, handouts, memoribilia, manufacturer exhibits, free samples, and not much tolerance for drunks or foul language (enjoy yourself, just don't be a jerk about it). Tons of stuff for sale if you desire, but not necessary. A "Program" for the race is $5, but it's more of a thick yearbook, with an insert of the day's race lineup, stickers, badges...all sealed in a heavy resealable plastic collector's case. The NFL would charge $30 for the same thing. Baseball's getting nearly as bad....and expensive.

And courtesy...the last time I was at Daytona for the Pepsi 400, I was lugging cooler bags with food and a CASE of beer for 4 (try THAT at a stadium). A track employee saw me struggling, dropped what he was doing and asked if he could carry the load for me! He got another employee, and the two of them lugged it all up nearly 30 rows, showed us our seats, wiped them clean, and helped stow the load. They refused a tip.."without you, we wouldn't have a job"!!!
